Have you tried exploring whether an internal move to another practice group would be feasible/supported?
Unfortunately, it would not be supported.
There are busy V20 project finance teams who would use you on the borrower side. There are several work streams where you can retool quickly with two years of M&A experience.
No. If you are good enough, big firms are always hiring. Just be good and hope that you practice area is growing at the right time. There are thousands of examples. Biglaw cannot only hire from other biglaw firms.
I worked at a midlaw firm (350+attorneys), switched to a small firm (50+) attorneys for a 40% salary increase, have been contacted twice for an AM20 firm. When I thought about leaving the first firm for the smaller firm, I thought I would never be able to back to a larger firm, but I took the risk anyways because of the increase in salary (which I didn’t think was possible in a smaller firm). I love the small firm vibe, and I am still being recruited for big law. I don’t think it matters, just make sure that when you leave your current firm, you leave doors open if you can.
It’s God’s grace. Sometimes I have to pinch myself.
If you go with the regional/midlaw route, would you get experience dealing with federal matters or more state specific matters?
I ask because in my bar association’s environmental law section, the big law folks tend to deal more with federal matters and the smaller shops are more state/municipality focused.
Also worth considering going to a federal agency to get reps if you can do so.
