Your being used. The one thing you can’t get back is time. Move on to a organization that will value your experience. There’s too many option! Why be complacent?
You think I should atleast give them 1-2 months when my industry REALLY gets busy to see if they decide to bring me on or just flat out move along?
The tortoise and the hare, your time will come. How long did it take for them to make the decision?
About 1 month. In that month I was able to bring about $100K in sales for the month of May.
Are you able to shadow the sales rep, put in some time learning the sales side as well? It would show you are serious about the opportunity when it’s available again.
I asked but they rather have it opposite where the sales guy shadows me to get hvac experience and see how I sell for him to follow. I don’t mind him following to learn about the equipment since he dosent have any experience in but at the same time I would assume a big company like this one would look internally as well as external.
Hang in there. 1) request a meeting with management to express you concerns about being pasted over for this opportunity and ask them why you were not selected. 2) express your desire to be ready for the next sakes opportunity and what you need to work on to be ready. 3) it is aged to find quality/qualified HVAC technicians so ask them if you can train someone to replace your excellent skills when the opportunity for sales opens up again. Excellent service people can make great sales people.
So far what I’ve done is express it to my boss that I want that position, use a spreadsheet to plot all my deals that closed as well as document my closing rate, and continued asking to be given more sales opportunities while the sales person is still in training. I did mention to my boss that the area the new salesperson would have to cover is very big. Before it could be done because the previous salesperson was experienced in hvac and knew what to look for but unfortunately not this guy.
Make your intention known that you would love to be a salesperson, and keep closing deals while you are in the field. I was hvac sales for years- best job ever.
Ok, make sure you get paid a separate commission over and above your hourly rate. If they don't agree raise your eyebrows and quietly look for another company that appreciates you, your time, and skills. Leave on a good note. Never burn bridges in hvac. Good luck
I would say if you really wanna go into sales and your company doesn't wanna give you the opportunity, find somewhere else. Some people in companies like some managers are willing to hold you off in your position due to the fact that they don't wanna lose you in the technician side and you are one of the back bones of the company. If you really wanted fight for it and apply somewhere else, don't let them hold you for more than 2-3 months. Otherwise, they are just stalling to find the next execus
Thanks for the advice. I think the same as you are suggesting. I’m going to give them 2-3 months and see what happens from there. Thanks!
Heyyy! This is an easy one really… take the sales position, kick backside as you do naturally, and use that experience to hunt for companies that you would “hire” as means of income. When you land something that makes you actually feel appreciated you’ll have leverage to stay or go. Give it 6mo to a year, (pretty on a resume and time to get something out of it), or however long it takes to land a place who values your accomplishments.
Just my two cents.
Learn what you can and keep track of all sales you are involved in- sounds like you already are. Let those relationships be yours with the companies you visit and service. Non sales means no non-compete when you leave for a sales role with a competitor, you’ve already got a book of business and know the pricing/service etc
Thanks for the feedback!
Learn what he knows team up with a worker have him train you .
Then you can have the confidence to go and tell them you are ready . A good salesman doesn’t have to know a lot he convinces the buyer to trust him and then you make sure you take care of your customer so he tells his friends about you!
I was 18 yrs old left Utah to go to Texas for a liquidation sale of a major electronics company I was the youngest owner said if you can’t cut it I’m going to send you home. I was 5th that year .
