Charles Schwab bank.....you can use any atm worldwide for free. Also, check out their fee structure. I'll bet its less than half of BoA. I have nothing but good things to say about them. Only downside is, they dont have physical branch offices.
Who pays fees for a bank account

Charles Schwab Bank,
I’ve had them for 10 years and it’s worked out awesome. No issues at all and I have no IRAs or any other accounts besides my checking and savings. Also they reimburse atm fees world wide.
Had so many bad experiences with BoA and eventually closed all my accounts with them. I am now with Chase and have found them to be better, but not amazing.

Why does it have to be a national bank?
ATMs are usually easier
Why not a credit union?
PNC
Have had PNC for 12+ years and they’ve been constantly improving, have never had a bad issue with then
Pnc doesn’t go west of Illinois though I don’t think. I loved to the west coast about 4 years ago and had to get rid of them.
I think I’m leaving towards Schwab based off these responses! I really care about the mobile app/online experience and customer service, are both of those good?

Yes!!! Mobile app is very good. Poster above is spot on. Customer service is number one....option to chat when you are logged into your account or call them. Once I lost my ATM card while overseas and they had a new one FedEx"d to me in a few days.
1 account in Charles Schwab (❤️) and one in Chase is the best idea
It doesn’t have to be national bank, I’m mostly located in NYC. I swear I saw someone recommend a bank on here that wasn’t chase or Wells Fargo, or one of the big banks that every unanimously loved

Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, CapitalOne, Ally, in that order. You can also get a local Credit Union that would be happy to take your business and provide just a tad more personalized service if you happen to have a branch close by.
I use Chase for checking + $20K savings; rest of my cash is in Ally
Second ally. Seriously the best. No fees, interest on checking + savings, free atm withdrawals. Couldn’t be happier.
PNC is good but definitely more regional, and their online portal isn’t great. I have also had good experiences with Citizen’s and their portal is much better
I love Ally Bank. You can use any atm as they reimburse ATM fees (up to a limit). They also have no fees on most things
Schwab is awesome, especially if you use them for IRA/brokerages since transfers are super simple. Even if you don’t, they don’t have any fees and great customer service
Chase
Chase has been great. Much better than BOA

PenFed or Navy if you qualify.

Credit unions are “membership” orgs and most have restrictions on who can join. Almost everyone qualifies for PenFed. NavyFed is restricted to military (all branches) and family members of existing members. I have a NavyFed account thanks to my brother who is a Navy veteran.
Are physical branches that important to you? Highly recommend Capital One 360
What’s bad about BOA?
Yeah preferred rewards are great and will remove fees from your checking. Def wouldn't use BOA as a savings account though, many other options with better interest rates (I use Ally personally). Also if you don't have the money to take advantage of the preferred rewards, you could try Schwab. I've used them as my primary checking account for years and they're great.
It does not need to be a physical branch
