I’m sorry you have had medical issues. Thank you for sharing!
Companies will still recognize that you have the JD and practiced in good standing for X number of years. That can not be taken from you even once you license is no longer active. Good luck finding work that is meaningful to you and in your recovery longterm!
Sorry to hear about medical problems. I hope you are ok. What will you do instead out of interest?
Free at last.
Enjoy the transition.
I know that is weird, you have a whole journey ahead of you though. Thank you for sharing. My mother also an attorney, just went inactive for the first time due to medical issues as well (Alzheimer's), it was hard for her.
I’ve never understood why people give up their law licenses. I’ve personally known four others who did. (I gave mine up in a state I waived into as corporate counsel only when I sold the property we owned and dissolved the companies I was counsel for.) But I never got giving up law totally. I mean, CLEs aren’t that expensive and the biennial license fee is negligible. Lawyers I know who have completely retired keep their bar status active. It is one of those things I’d never give up. What do you need to do to go back to active status? I know one lawyer in particular who “resigned” from the bar—there’s got to be more to that story though.
Cost. Have you ever been on a fixed income with medical issues? Expensive is subjective. Sometimes something has to give.
Technically, a lawyer is someone who possesses a JD, whereas an attorney is someone who has passed the bar exam, from what I read.
I pray that your medical issues are getting better and i pray you find the purpose in your new journey.
Get it back! 🔈AND DO IT YESTERDAY! I work for the state ethics board and we routinely discipline attorneys for “practicing law” while inactive or retired. Since there’s no real definition of practicing law, anything that happens in life falls under this umbrella. Family members that have a quick legal question, the elderly neighbor who wants you to proofread a letter to their mortgage company, the list goes on and on. Just save yourself the headache and keep it active
I left practice after 22 years following a mental health diagnosis. Best thing I've done for myself. Enjoy the next chapter of your life.
