Well, do you want the deliverable or not? If I don't understand what you're asking for then how am I supposed to do it?
It’s because your question wasn’t helpful. Be more specific to what you’re not understanding.
One way of doing this is to repeat back what you DID understand and ask if you got the task right.
Imagine explaining how to do a task to someone and their only response was “I don’t get it”. That’s what you did.
Go P1! As a mid level associate, I appreciate when a partner expects me to be intelligent, but shows me grace if I say something dumb. It’s much easier to work hard for them.
You should have said, "Oh that was English? I thought you were casting a spell or something.". She might be having a bad day but still she could have opted for a more non-offensive response.
Your manager was very rude but obviously it’s not easy to call her out on that. Just say ‘yes you are of course speaking English but I need to be sure I understand what you want so the task is done properly. Help me to help you by clarifying what is required please’.
When people act like this towards me my immediate reaction is to laugh, like they’re joking, because they just must be! I’ve laughed out loud in people’s faces before and it’s a darkly hilarious situation. It’s not something I could even control, just happens. Probably stems from years of not caring what other people think 🤔…. And generally having a f’ck it attitude when it comes to others bs (for me, others bs is a super broad category, I generally feel like most ppl are full of sh’t — keep those feelings to myself of course). All this to say: laugh at them, act like what they said was hilarious, because it was but not for the reasons they think, roll your eyes while you are laughing (this is also part of my natural reaction, to be clear, when I say laugh I mean a big guffawing head back eyes rolling laugh), and then walk away and do what you think they wanted and they can F off if it’s not correct. They had an opportunity to fix it on the front end and chose to potentially make more work. Let them live with their stupid choices.
No one said the comment was acceptable but there are right ways and wrong ways of responding to it. Try reading some stoic philosophy before you kick off on yet another of your arrogant little rants, still trying to show us all what a big, brave guy you are.
Wow! Seems like there might be some deeper issues based on her response…what ended up happening? Did you complete the task? Did she ask someone else?
A generic or suitable response to how someone else would handle that situation can’t be provided without more info.
Wow. I probably would have snapped back. That's just rude and disrespectful.
Sounds like my boss that came in and nearly the entire team resigned because she spoke to us that way.
Example of the convo in question? Does this happen a lot?
Yeah, this seems to reflect on EA’s boss. My response would depend on how frequently this happened.
As an out-of-character response to stress? Obviously an error on your boss’s part, but everybody makes mistakes. Hopefully they recognize it and treat you differently in the future.
As a pattern of behavior? Not acceptable.
No response but strike 1
Irrespective on the situation, this is not by any means an appropriate way to talk to someone, especially in a professional setting (or any). It’s very condescending, degrading (and if English is not your first language, somewhat racist too). There is always a respectful way to communicate. Senior employee should act by giving example and being a role model.
It depends what you want out of this? Forget and move on is probably easiest route to get on with your life but if you feel offended and would like not to let this go (totally understandably though) then there are options too.
Sorry you had to experience this. If you are based in the US, it’s difficult to modify that person’s behaviour as they (company) could look at an option to get rid of you (not saying the 100% would but they can). Would you have anonymous whistleblower channels? If so, you could raise your concerns there but in a manner that doesn’t identify you.
