I was promoted after three months one time. Just work hard, prove your worth, know the landscape (ie - don’t ask to be promoted to a director immediately if you’re on a very structured account that already has one) and show them how invaluable you are to the business.
Skip a level, no. Promoted to a new position, sure. Start looking for Director roles, and refuse to take anything lower.
I don't think you'd be skipping a level at any shop as that doesn't seem right, including for morale, which managers have to account for. But you could get promoted a lot faster at an independent shop of you're very good. Also, it may be that what you're working on is below your job description / too easy, not so much that you're overqualified. Not enough info for us to know, but some things to think about.
I have never seen that happen except at the very highest levels like someone being no plucked out for a presidency that you didn’t see coming. But not in the regular ladder
Thanks all, very useful responses.
Also, important to note, you have a lot more hope of this happening at an independent shop than a holding company agency.
I know someone who skipped from Senior AD to CD without switching shops. They were an amazing AD but they were definitely not ready for all the management and responsibilities that came with being CD. They handled it poorly and it messed with morale for the other ACDs who were skipped over.
