I fell into my career by accident. As a kid, all I wanted was to be a mom. I didn’t plan to go to college, but my dad pushed me, and I ended up in finance. Even then, I never pictured myself working long-term. After graduation, a recruiter reached out and I took the job, thinking it was just until I had kids.

4 yrs later, I’m still here. Childfree due to infertility and not sure what my future holds. Grateful for the career, but curious… how have you handled when life is not what you imagined?

I'm right there with you. My husband and I are going through fertility issues as well and I'm starting to get to the age where I don't think it's going to be a reality for us. We've started talking about adoption, but I always wanted to give birth. During the really dark moments, I just try to practice gratitude and remind myself of all the wonderful things I do have, even if there are some things that I really wanted that I may never get.

I love the gratitude perspective. Sending hugs

Life has taken a lot of turns for me. What I pictured when I was a kid, young adult, and older adult has all been starkly different. You can envision plans, but do not be rigid in them because you never know what is coming. When things turn out for the worse, I have to pick out what is going on right now that I am happy with.

I suppose a lot of us wind up here after going down some winding paths. My career was never something I thought about that much, it just seemed like something I could do. And it has worked out well enough for me, but sometimes I think I should have taken more risks or tried to do something more meaningful.

Tbh I think it’s more common for life to not be as you planned. So much unexpected things happen and it’s not something you can control!

Baby furniture. What is everyone doing? FTM and trying to figure out if it’s worth investing in very expensive nursery furniture. We were looking at the Natart furniture collection and the Silva collections. These both come in at about $2000-$2400. The furniture is high quality and grows with the child. Alternatively I could go the lower end route at get everything for like $800. Is that wise? I hear horror stories about low quality and paint chipping from the baby teething on the crib.

How much parental leave does your company offer to employees? Please include location, size of company and type of business. We are a SaaS company in NYC with 60 employees. Is anyone concerned the push for sexual equality in pay without accordant leveling of parental leave is gonna backfire?

Here’s a hypothetical:

A company has 2 candidates, aged 25-30, equal in every respect save one’s a man the other’s a woman. Maybe the woman is a slightly better candidate overall. They’d have equal comp.

Company considers the woman a riskier bet due to possibility she’ll take maternity leave — and considers the man less risky for his ineligibility to take as much leave. 🤷

Repost - The % of the African American population killed by police in 2019 is roughly 0.0005%. It was 235 people. But around the same year 6,000 african americans were killed by eachother. How do we reconcile these facts? In 2013, 72% of african americans were born to single parent households; one of the strongest indicators of future poverty and criminal disposition. Can we acknowledge and fix instances of police brutality while also not ignoring our cultural problems as well?

I’m in an interesting dilemma. Very interested in leaving my company, but I am also going through IVF. I know most new jobs require a year wait before you can go on maternity leave. Does anyone know a great company to work for that does not require this? Obviously, I’m getting a bit ahead of myself, but if this works, I don’t want to accept a job and not be paid for maternity leave because I am doing this solo. Appreciate all the help!

I give massive kudos to all the parents out there juggling work and home life. But it’s starting to feel like I pulled the short stick by not having a kid. Really struggling to pick up all of the slack from all of the colleagues that do have kids and feel like the expectation is that parents should turn off while the rest are working from 7am - 2am everyday to make up for it.

I know I will get hated by saying this. Do you think gay pride events are portraying a bad image about our community to public? (Drugs, sexual, inappropriate clothes, and sometimes like strip clubs- some parts). I know it is right to present us but I just feel it is not the right way to show who we are. I wish the pride where everybody can connect in a more friendly way (outdoor game- team work, dance, drink something not too sexual.) there are some good parts of pride tho. Any opinions?
