I filed an insurance claim on my roof and only got $5,500 and my deductible is $5K. This is not my first claim this year (break-in) I’m conscious that my premiums will increase.

Given it’s only $500, can I cancel the claim to avoid the hit on my premiums?

No. Once you report the claim, it stays on your record for 3-10 years (depending on the cause of loss), regardless of whether the claim is paid out. Learned the hard way on this. Ugh. With multiple claims, you may have trouble finding new insurance. All carriers will see those claims.

like

Whenever the deductible is about the same as the cost I would just have it fixed myself without going through insurance. It’s such a scam lol

like

You might be able to fight the claim if the roof actually needs to be replaced, but that’s tough if it’s minor damage. I’ve gotten second opinions, hired independent contractors. I lost but still tried. Anything with water is tricky. You want to call immediately if it’s flooding or a leaky roof because you want the remediation work done immediately. They’ll minimize the damage and repair time. A day makes a difference on water damage. If it’s something minor I would have fixed it myself. You probably just didn’t know. I probably would have called if I thought it was a roof replacement. A handful of shingles probably not. I got a roof replaced for a 5x5ft section being damaged, a 60ft tree bounced off my house. The roof ridge was damaged. I convinced the adjuster I’d need a crane to fix it. Fixed it with scaffolding a couple cases of beer and some friends. Got a check for 27k.

like

Is this in Florida? Don’t let them get you on the matching limit for 1% of your policy. Get an independent contractor to assess the roof and make a case for full replacement.
1. If 25% damaged you’re entitled to new roof
2. If repairs are infeasible due to brtttleness of shingles you should get full replacement
