I’ve done it and others have too. Don’t say you were fired.
I mean I don’t know if you have to say you were fired🤷♀️. I’m pretty sure just create a story where you’ve improved and learned from your time in industry and want to learn about this new opportunity
I was and interviewed at another. They asked what happened and I just said it wasn’t a fit and explained why and they were okay with it. Just identify a problem that wouldn’t be relevant at their company
The three firms seem to have different cultures. Fit is easy to speak to. Especially if you are a better fit with the firm you’re interviewing with. Should be part of your pitch. Emphasized, in fact. Saying you now understand the importance of cultural fit should be to your credit.
Stepping back more broadly, and not to be harsh, but I’d also question why you are trying after failing so consistently that you got fired. It takes a lot to get fired from MBB - basically a year straight of underperforming.
There are easier ways to make money and have a rewarding career if you didn’t “get” MBB consulting.
From the undergrad level, I’ve heard BCG promotes 70%+ to post mba
Wondering how this happens- can you tell why you got fired? Or make up a story about a fictitious friend who got fired for a similar reason. Just curious what it takes to get sacked.

The first question I would ask as an interviewer is “why not go back to [the MBB] where you started your career? You have relationships there and know the company”
You’ll have to navigate that. There are so many BCG boomerangs (start at BCG do something else, then come back) that I would have immediate suspicion if it was someone from Bain or McK.
Make sure you position your story as wanting to take this as an opportunity to “level up” on some dimension. All three firms have parts that are stronger than the other.
I appreciate your thoughts. My interpretation of what happened is above. I want to go back because after a few years in corporate I see the edges of my experience / knowledge and I don’t know of a better way to break through and improve than consulting. Corporate is slow and I’m almost always the smartest person in the room, the opposite of consulting.
I think the major failure on my part was mismanaging my career at MBB. I generally lean into challenges and risks. That solo assignment I mentioned when I had almost no experience was a big one. Knowing the dynamics of his consulting firms work now, it was stupid to accept it. I should have joined a project with a larger team and a good manager so that I could learn.
Why do you even want to work from MBB if you got fired? There are so many other great jobs aren’t there? The grass isn’t greener over here.
