I had an interview at a Marriott hotel near LAX and was told I got the job right after. They made an account for me and gave me a training schedule. Then I was suddenly asked to do a second interview. After doing well, they rejected me because of my accent. It felt discriminatory and insulting, especially from a brand that claims to value diversity. I was hurt and disappointed to be judged that way

Omg that's so crazy. You were already hired and they reversed it over your accent?? In LA of all places? That seems so uncharacteristic of Marriott. I guess I have to ask.. how are you sure it was because of your accent? Could there have been any other reason? I'm not saying they weren't discriminating, just curious what makes you think it was necessarily that. I'm so sorry you lost the role!

In the UK, race is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010. Subsequently if you're of a different race then your accent (and potentially religion) are part of that protected characteristic. Employers can get into serious trouble and companies can land fines up to unlimited if you're deemed to be unfairly and severely persecuted/discriminated against because of of it. Such as losing your job, especially when you've just been hired.

I would seriously consider finding a lawyer and suing them for it on a discrimination basis.

As it's Marriott I'd be considering and pushing for a hefty payout too.

In these situations, I feel like there were other circumstances that weren't discussed and it made them renig on the offer.

The reason could be that they had already promised the role to someone else who is employed with the company already.

like

Sorry to hear that, hope you find a place where you are valued

THIS!! I would've hate if they got hired for this company and realized afterwards that the management team isn't what it appears to be. Seems to me like they dodged a bullet.

This seem like what happened to me after two months of interviewing plus a two days of tasting and a leadership interview I pass everything the chef call me on a Monday verbal agreement that I was hired then on Friday of the same week the job was pulled idk what happened but someone happened yet no one told me the reason why. They reason I didn’t get the job was because I didn’t check the box that I that said i worked for the Marriott yet I passed every step of the process and my tasting also to lose the job on a technicality was stupid and yet I don’t know what happened it wasn’t my skill because I have it was just bullshit yet they are good with DEI but I guess some people are gatekeepers of the brand of what is supposed to be and what supposed to be

That is for sure discrimination...

Started a new job 7 months ago. There’s been a hiring freeze and it seems they canned the recruitment team. Things seems to be slowing down drastically in the span of a week. Getting the resume all spiffed up and getting interviews together. When do you make the exit? “When you find a job” I know, but…

Also, would me making my exit to another role that I might leave in a 8 months bite me in the ass down the line? Do I just grab anything in the interim?

Should I complain to a firm's HR if the interviewers laughed at my answer during an interview?
