I have 32 years working in military prison and federal prison. If I applied to your position as a Sales Associate would you count those years as customer service? When speaking with my customers now in auto sales, I tell them I get my good customer service from working in prison. I had to be fair when dealing with them or I would go home with a few extra holes in my body, if I go home at all.

Your experience does not equate to customer service, and just as importantly, customer service is only a small part of sales.

Unless you know the hiring manager, who is willing to take a chance on you, they will want to see that you have a number of years of direct experience, and more importantly that you have consistently attained quota over extended periods of time.

I am not saying that you don't have what it takes to be a successful seller, I am just sharing my experience with trying to get a job in sales.

I appreciate your candor and answer. Just a bit of clowning on my part. I do have a bit of success in the automotive sales arena for 7 years now. That’s something I’ve always wanted to do.

Honestly, if you could articulate it during the interview I would. That will be the key. Explaining how you dealt with an infinite spectrum of personalities, high pressure, trying to get the best outcome. I totally think it applies but on you to lay that out.

My first sales job was selling Hondas. Sold 20 in the first month. Went on to win Salesperson of the month virtually 2 of every 3 months there for the next 3 1/2 years. Another salesperson asked how did I do it. I told him, honesty and humbleness. He stated the fact that I was an older man, it must be because of my life experiences being able to relate to various people.

Absolutely. Building trust, staying calm under pressure, reading people, and communicating clearly are all transferable skills. The environment may be different, but many of the core skills are the same.

AWS vs Cloudflare BDR roles

AWS lowballed but I negotiated to match Cloudflare. Cloudflare offers more equity but AWS has a higher base.

I love Cloudflare. The people are great but it’s an engineering culture and the sales team isn’t as well shaped up and I can’t go for a promotion until at least 18 months of tenure. I am an investor in the company and think of them super highly. I’ve already got half a years SDR experience and AWS promotes quicker.

AWS has prestige but is it worth it?
