Trail of Ten Falls, definitely. It's super popular for a reason, everyone loves waterfalls

Well I’m less of an intense hiker and more of a nature and great food/drinks kinda person… so this is influenced by that 😂 but in case you’re interested:
I like to take visitors to any of the trails up the gorge but go closer to Hood River so that you can pop over there for lunch and/or a winery tour. Or just do Syncline (make a ressie!) and hang in their gorgeous garden area (one of the most serene wineries up there, and delicious wine of course — bring food from somewhere in Hood River if you do this. They have light snacks but it’s not much).
If you do this, do the hike in the morning and just time it so lunch and wine are at the right time… they get grumpy about being late for reservations. Though otherwise they’re wonderful hosts! Just a weird pandemic leftover thing…
Then if you’re adventurous and wanting more nature time, rent some water crafts and get out on the river (it’s insanely windy tho, all year round, so only do this if the whole group is strong in the water). The town has great lil shops to check out if that’s anyone’s fancy… and the coffee and brewery there is also delicious. And if you’re wanting, the historic hotel in the water there is a super charming spot for a weekend getaway.
And then I’ll shut up after this, promise! If you’re up that way, and staying overnight also check out the society hotel in that area. It’s got a great spa and is so lovely 😊
(But for real hiking, close-ish: any hikes out by Timothy lake - which you should then Paddleboard on! Or Mt Tabor if you wanna stay local but feel like you’re walking around a forest… if you do this on a weekend pop into the Coquine Market for coffee and pastries, so good! Powell Butte is close but just okay IMO… oh and Ape Caves up in WA is pretty cool!)
My fav hike nearby is Neahkahnie mountain near manzanita
Are you going for Nature or going for Portland?
If nature, I really liked Angel's Rest, though you really can't go wrong with almost any of the gorge hikes. 😀. I also like Cascade Head towards the coast, but again, haven't really found one I didn't like yet.
If Portland views, Lower Macleay Trail to Pittock Mansion. I haven't done this, but it sounds amazing. I've been to Pittock Mansion. That's worth the visit, I think.

Im almost certainly going to the Gorge and doing horsetail falls or Dog Mountain
I think Angel’s Rest is a great one for showing people from out of town. Not too far from Portland, moderate, great view from the top.
Update: I ended up doing the mirror lake — it was a cloudy day so it was a bit underwhelming
Bummer, but hey at least your friend can say they got the real portland cloudy experience. And it wasn't smoke! Hope they enjoyed the trip even with the gray.
