As long as you have something to offer that’s worth paying you for, you can join the industry and learn the other stuff. Just remember that you do need to be employed in a function and be able to do your work without supervision in the industry.

Move from slides to what actually the company does to make money. Operations, sales, etc

I'm only 3 years in but already have the same worries. Following thread for insight/advice 👍
Yeah !! I was is same boat 8 yrs ago . Industry is good if u need that deep technical skills . I moved from Ibm to EY now again
What are you referring to when you say “technical” skills? I.e. programming in a certain language: Java, python, etc... or are you referring to industry depth?
I have worked in both industry and consulting and I believe you have ample opportunity in both arenas given your in the right role.
C2 I’m actually @ D and it is possible
I know it’s gonna be cliche to say this but it truly is about networking. You don’t need to be in the specific service line though if you are just trying to get to a certain engagement that aligns with the technical skill you want to learn albeit it would be easier IF you were in that service line.
Same thing in here. I started to take some online courses to sharpen my technical skills and sat from some interviews to companies which I am not interested in, in order to assess what skills they are looking for to prepare for those I am mostly interested in.
I left federal after 6 months. I was disappointed with the opportunities and pace of work. I think it is about where and who; I saw people succeeding in the same amount of time (last 5 years) just as I did on the commercial side. I just never found my tribe initally and I saw a lot of people leave (pretty much anyone who started with me at the same time in the federal sector left the company so like 10-20 people are gone).
Well what you should gain is consulting skills.
That’s an excellent point! It’s more along the lines how I would like my life to be. No 60-80hrs weeks, flexibility and ability to work from home or other places around the world and work-life balance.
