I have so much gratitude that I self selected compsci as my major somewhat on a whim. I’m a first generation American, my father is a doctor, I didn’t grow up with a ton of vocational exposure, and it wasn’t as accessible last generation. I was originally destined to do something in the health industry (PA, pharmacy, or nurse) but software engineering has surpassed my expectations and allowed for a comfortable life. I’m sure others have non traditional paths and I’d love to hear about them.

Congrats on finding something you're passionate about! I don't have much of a unique perspective to offer as I've got the furthest thing from a non-traditional path imaginable. Dad's an engineer, worked with him on tons of projects growing up, knew this is what I wanted to do. It's worked out well.

That’s so cool!! I think it’s awesome you were inspired by your pops

I wound up pursuing an education and career in tech mostly for a silly reason, my cousin had done it and when I was a teenager it seemed like he was doing cool stuff. And, I grew up around computers, like most of us did, so it seemed kind of like a natural thing. In some ways I wish I'd pursued something more interesting, but my job has given me opportunities to learn a lot so I really can't complain.

Software engineering is pretty interesting and everyday is different. I think you actually did pursue something interesting and you shouldn’t regret

Hello everyone!

Currently looking to jump from Health Care to Pharma/Biotech. Does anyone work at Gilead and can serve as a reference? The current department I’m in, I do not fit the culture as it is a very archaic way of “managing” people. I have about a decade of a variety of work experience, majority in customer service/coordination/administration.

Would love any assistance if possible!

I’m scared shitless that I’ll spiral out of control both at work and at home if something doesn’t change soon. Any suggestions on how to keep this job and keep it together?

I want to report this to the FBI’s elder fraud department but I don’t want to complicate her situation even more.

Just found out that my favorite aunt, who claimed I was her “favorite” niece, chose to leave all her valuables to her other two nieces who never visited or called her once in the last ten years. My aunt passed away suffering from cancer last year and didn’t have her own kids. I was there by her side throughout her battle. I still wish I had done more, made her life easier. I probably sound petty, but a part of me is forcing me to re-evaluate every interaction I ever had with her.

Hi all - just joining and looking for some guidance! I am currently in an IT internship position (making pretty solid money considering) and following this summer I will stay on part time during my senior year (discussing a full-time job offer after already). I’m getting my computer science degree, so I would like to do something more technical in the workplace when I graduate. How do I advocate myself for that to my manager without sounding unappreciative of the position I’m in?
