I have to pay almost $500 a month to get to my "local" client site. Who can I complain to about this if my manager doesn't let me bill in? I can't afford this on my average salary.

You guys probably have a policy. We can bill for any costs incremental to what it would take to get to our office normally. Is $500 also what it would take to get to your local office? If so you're out of luck.

like

I just read back further, if you can drive & park for the same price as going to your home office then you don't have a case. It's your choice to take a more expensive method of transport (the train in this case).

@P1- Difference isn't $200. It's not a preference of taking the train. I was saying parking in city alone is $200 a month. Then add in bridge cost and tolls. I'm just asking for some commuting cost to be expensed. I just don't think $500/month is a "reasonable" commuting cost.

like

@OP Based on what you just said, you're right. But you've been hinting in bits and pieces about the cost and never outright stating it all in one post, which is why it makes me feel like there's something I'm missing. As many others have said, this should be no problem to expense. If your manager said no, that's why I'm thinking there's something else going on here that you aren't sharing.

like

@P1:Once I get her answer, I'll post it here so we can discuss. Today was my first day and I already know this expense isn't going to work. I sent her an email once I got home.

like

Figure out total cost per day to your home office. Sounds like $40/week for a tank of gas /5 days per week = $8/day. Also add any tolls.

Anything above that number per day you should expense to the client. Simple.

like

OP, I had two people on one project driving 60+ miles each way to the client. They were local and PMO never allowed them to charge in mileage because technically they both lived that far or farther from the local office. Projects often roll on local resources to be stingy on expenses. It was totally ridiculous because they spent way more time weekly driving to work (1 hour or more each way) than anyone else on the project spent on their flights in. But yeah over a year on the project for both of them and they were never allowed to charge in any mileage. Being local can really suck if you can't work remote.

like

No I don't . It's same distance as office I was told I can't

like

OP, yeah the least they could do is give you mileage honestly. Having a local resource is saving the project so much on expenses. $500 a month is nothing and that's totally ridiculous. I would try to talk to someone about it and roll off if they don't let you bill it in.

like

That's crazy. I don't understand how they expect us to do that. It's not like they are increasing our salaries to afford commuting costs.....

like

Op - you should be able to work this out with your project lead. In all my projects we've always been sensitive to the local "cost disadvantage" and figured out a way to deal with it for local people.

like

Glad you worked it out Op!

How far is the client from your home? From Accenture home office location? Is the amount you are paying what it would cost to get/from your home office location?

It's 38 miles from my house to my home office and 38 miles from my house to client. But client is in the big city and I'm in the burbs. Driving to my office takes ~$30 tank of gas a week... a daily train pass is $28. So not even comparable.

In the SF Bay Area it'd cost me $306 to go from my home into the city for work. They might let you bill some of it if it's on top of what you'd normally pay to come into the home office.

^only if policy allows. we can't expense parking if the client is in the same proximity of KPMG

You're supposed to expense mileage, which should more than cover your gas costs

Yes PWC1- no bridges/tolls. Just mileage

Idk your policy, our policy is incremental cost. Someone walked to work from their office and expensed over $600 a month for mileage and stuff.

For $500 a month you could probably get a rental car for the month - I worked on a project with someone who was local, and renting a car for a month was cheaper than the gas/mileage he would've charged in per month. If you present the options to PMO you can try and get that approved

@K2-A2: the $500 is the monthly train cost from my house to client site. Driving to my home office from my house is prob $75-80 a month depending on gas prices. Driving to client from my house would incur bridge cost, tolls, and parking in the city-which is at least $200 a month alone.
