A great exercise that I like to give my teams (and do myself) is to design your perfect week into 30 minute increments (weekends included).
Take each day from waking up to bed and take a really aspirational look at your week (remember, it’s the week you want, not the one you have). This should include a reality of work, but ensure you’re adding things like exercise, social, self-care, meals, and sleep.
When you put it out there, subconsciously, you’ll be more aware about how you spend your time. And it’s ok if work doesn’t look like 40 hours. The point is that time is finite and every hour you have, you also have a choice.
I find that doing this every 6 months is a great exercise to ground you on your priorities.
168 hours in a week. Use them to your benefit, otherwise, they’ll use you. 😉
Love this advice!!
Start small and set realistic goals for yourself. Today I will leave 30min earlier than I would normally for example. Additionally, I can definitely relate with the amount of time and energy spent. In 2022, I found myself not being able to accomplish all I needed for the day. Meetings and other things got in the way. Something that worked for me in terms of better time management was to block out chunks of it on my calendar to focus on important tasks. You got this!
YMMV - I was in the same situation and had open discussions with my director. It had been going on for over 4 months and I needed a break or I was going to burn out. We then talked to other people on the team and figured out there was enough going on to get another person on the team. We did that and the load started to balance and (unknown to me) my other coworkers could stop working weekends. There is still the occasional night, but much more palatable.
You must be willing to walk away
I can relate. It's been a matter of being ok with good enough. Strive for excellence not perfection
