I love the schedule of 3 12s a week, as I can get a stretch of days off, sometimes a week off in between my 2 work weeks. But at the sametime, working on an inpt floor can be very stressful. I have had some shifts where I feel like I cannot do this anymore, but some days are not that bad at all. Looking into switching to outpt nursing, but it would be a scedule trade with 5ons and 2 offs. Would like to hear your experiences who switched from inpt to outpt. Are you happy with your decision?

Check out OR nursing. I transferred from acute trauma to the OR almost 2 years ago. Best devision EVER! I did a 6 month residency but it went by so fast. Then I was allowed to choose my own set schedule. I work W/Th/F every week and take off for PTO whenever I want with out the guilt trip from managers. I’m rarely if ever asked to pick up a shift, too! I do 1-3 neuro cases a day, 1 patient at a time. I spend about 10 minutes with them for assessment then they go under anesthesia then to PACU. I have 4 consecutive days off and my mental health is so much better.

There’s still stress but it’s different stress. It’s stress I can leave in my locker when I clock out. My job satisfaction is extremely high, I no longer cry in the parking lot before/after a shift. Transition was super easy, I search internal posting for OR position, interviewed, accepted a 6 month residency to change specialties. It went by fast. I was comfortable within 9-12 months. It’s more learning the surgeries (positioning, prepping, preference cards). I do a lot of foleys, rarely do an IV, and NEVER give IV meds. I’ve been in my new position for about 18 months, I’m a charge nurse and neuro coordinator for the neuro service line. Hope this helps.

I did inpatient nursing and worked nights 2 12s with a day off and then work the 3rd shift. I also did outpatient 2 12s and 2 8s and now I do 5 8hr shifts. What I have learned so far: I appreciate the shorter but more shifts in the week over doing longer hrs. I am less tired and can enjoy my after work hours doing what I want or spending time with family

Would never go back to hospital/inpatient. Started off in the ER, then went to clinic, now working from home, 4 10’s with 3 consecutive days off every week. Because I’m not doing any direct patient care, I know I’m going to get most if not all of my vacation requests approved. I requested time off today and heard by end of shift that it was approved. Less stress, less mess and less drama. You won’t regret it.

I work for Kaiser. I make about 110k per year in Washington state. I make the same amount as other nurses in my company working in the clinic or urgent care.

I transitioned from Medical-telemetry to critical care. Even though I am an ICU nurse, I predominantly work on the Intermediate Critical Care unit Even though the patient load is better, the patient acuity is worse. Like you said, some days are better than others. What keeps me in the hospital setting is that I leave work at work. I immediately put my phone on do not disturb as soon as I clock out. I decided I wasn't going to let being a nurse burn me out...again.

like

When I worked as a RN I started on the floor then ended in our PACU. Much better in pacu and they still did 12’s. You recover your patients then send them to the floors it’s great. You do typically need some tele experience.

like

I have a year plus experience in Tele and have seen for PACU positions they ask for either ER or ICU experience in general. Do you think getting into OR would help me transition into PACU?

I am def happy with my decision for my mental mind and health 😁

Yes, work life balance and mental health is very important!

Try to negotiate a 4 day work week working 10 hrs/day. Worked outpatient 5 days a week, always worked longer than 8 hrs then played catch up over the weekends. It’s exhausting at least working 4 days you have a day off in the week to catch up with family business.

Yes, after getting 4 days a week off it will be hard to just have 2 days. That's what I need to weigh down. Appreciate your respons!

I am currently working 4 10s and it’s just too much for me try and find a procedural area (outpatient) that does 3 12s I know it’s hard to come by…

I just want to say to the Indian managers / SMs etc. stop taking everything so seriously and stressing people out on your teams. I have had managers who put initiative work so high in importance that it stresses me out about client work. Chill out and stop emailing on weekends. Hang out with your families! Doesn’t mean don’t work hard but chill the heck out people. Clearly this is just a job that doesn’t pay you well enough in the first place why are you stressing other people out too?!
