I really want to continue to wfh because I can effectively care for my elderly parents and reduce my commute. I’m a midlevel right now. My firm announced that we’re going back to the office soon and I don’t want to go back. How do I broach the topic to the partners? Google says I need to make it sound like it benefits them more than me, how it helps the firm or how it was their idea not mine, and provides examples that seem geared to companies that aren’t law firms. Or, should I lateral?

Lateral! Come to Cooley. We don’t f around with this bs . A good number of people were remote pre pandemic too

like

Is Cooley allowing fully remote positions? I would love to work there but am located in Texas.

like

Lateral. Make the firms that do this pay. That's they only way they'll learn.

like

The reason why lateraling is important too is because if your home firm is against this deep down, but they agree to it because of the market conditions, they’ll probably hold it against you. My friend at another firm who I’m recruiting to Cooley currently said his boss jokes about the remote people “going first in a downturn.” I think that’s actually true if your firm has that culture, that’s why finding a firm with a pro remote culture is important too. It’s not just about getting permission.

I am an m&a junior at a firm that is generally considered a lifestyle firm (pay below market but target hours are lower unless pushing for partner). Over the pandemic period, we have had so many senior associates and paralegals leave that there is no one to ask questions to and I’m doing paralegal work (we are all in survival mode). I’m not convinced the partners in my team (who are aware of the problem but cannot convince management) can recruit people to replace given we pay below market.

I'm probably going to bill 1,500 hours max this year due to being very slow and taking time off for a delayed honeymoon which I disclosed during my interview process. I have been told my work product is good, I don't turn anything down, I participate in non-billable work, I'm responsive and I always let people know I'm available to help. Can you name a firm (preferably NY office) that lets its associates work from a different country with no issues? The mid-size firm I’m currently at has been very flexible during covid but I’m looking to change firm (biglaw). Since my family is abroad I find it extremely valuable to be able to do this (I did this even before covid for a couple of weeks, twice a year). I’ve heard firms like Latham and Paul Weiss don’t allow it for tax reasons.

3rd Year v15 Biglaw lit associate, curious what people’s experience with going in house as a litigator has been. For those that have made the switch, did you have a sense of whether it was feasible for you to transition back to biglaw?

For anyone who is burnt out and looking to leave big law and go to a midsize, do your research. I was one of those people and I can tell you the grass is NOT greener on the other side. It’s a myth. In retrospect, I should’ve stayed and set better boundaries and not have taken this 35% pay cut.

Do the partners you work with get to see your self-evaluation or does it only stay with the review committee? If the former, how soon after you submit your self-evaluation do the partners get to review it?
