I’ve been teaching for 19 years. I have yet to find a place where I’m truly happy. I just do my best to find the silver lining. There are pros and cons at every school, they’re just different depending on where you end up.
Felt that way for about a year and then the rose colored glasses came off

I did. For me the cons were still better than my past experiences.
I think when the rose colored glasses come off, it's time for me to reorient my motivation and passion. I try to find new ways to make my current role my dream role. Like, I became really passionate about art so I started integrating it into lesson plans more and it made me love my job again

Wow, that's a great perspective to have!
I don’t think a dream role / school exists. There are always going to be flaws. It’s just what you are willing to deal with.
At year 3, I was in my ideal district.
At year 4, I was able to move into my ideal building/position. I'll stay put until I retire! (18 more years)
I am truly in my dream school. Some days, I feel a little outclassed, but everyone is a family.
My situation is probably different than most because music is pretty much a universal language. If music is your passion, and teaching kids to excel and experience it is your mission, then any job can be your dream job. There are times I think maybe I'm too comfortable and need a change of scenery, but then I have an "ah-ha" moment with a student and realize this job can never be boring.
Although I agree that there are flaws in every job, no matter the career, I have been fortunate to find myself in several schools with admin who appreciated my effort and supported me even through difficult situations. I regretfully left each of these schools due to relocation because of my husband’s job and luckily love where I am now. I think just trying to be a positive light no matter where you are makes a difference.
I had a dream job years ago at my school teaching gifted children. Those were the best two years out of 15. A new teacher was hired to teach a different grade in the beginning but she had seniority in the district so I lost my spot. It’s really been a struggle since then. People don’t realize how nice gifted is. And if they say it’s hard - they’re lying!!!

Does seniority play a large affect in public schools?
Eight years ago, I joined the faculty of a school that is now my dream job. We have great students, a wonderful admin and a superintendent who greets kids into buildings every day. Sometimes, she’s at the bus line, sometimes she’s opening doors for car riders. Always, she is smiling.
I taught for one year during the pandemic, then my father got sick and passed away this last summer . Now, two years later I dream of being a teacher again. It’s been so difficult to find a position. Southern California is not short teachers only substitutes. Hopefully I can find something by the end of this year.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Praying you find the place meant for you soon!
