Happened to me. Four years ago the day after it happened I saw a posting for the exact same title/grade. For what it’s worth, there’s no legal recourse. Which seems like bullshit to me.

It’s really bad. But I guess is also a good thing that agencies are paying more attention to the employees, renewing the team, trying to get the good ones that got laid off.
Could be different teams or clients.
When I’ve seen this IRL it’s totally different departments and roles hiring vs reducing. Business is shifting in a major way.

Same sh*t. Different decade. Don't sweat it. Fwiw, many employers use the real need for layoffs to selectively thin the herd of their least favorite, troublesome, or expensive creatives. If this is you, consider the benefits... I got laid off once (back in 2011) and it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me, career-wise. I produced more work and made more money in the following years than ever before. (Although, I didn't get laid off during a pandemic, so there's that.)
