You misunderstand what they mean.
They are saying you don’t need to give deference to others based on title, you can offer ideas, suggestions, requests.
As for your position on being assigned tasks, you can usually refuse certain work and stay being lower paid if you prefer it that way
If she was taking on the role of someone who left, that’s not ok, she should reasonably got promoted and got the pay rise.
If she was growing into the more senior role then it’s the nature of (mostly) annual cycle of promotions.
They say “titles don’t matter”. I say neither does their opinion.

Matters to me. I want different titles so I built my resume to show my story of how I progressed / advanced / abilities and pay. Then I can sell my career story as I interview for the next step in my career!

This is wild. I’ve heard that and it made me feel good. My directors/managers were willing to get their hands dirty on the same projects I worked on at a lower level. It made me feel like we were a team.
Of course it does, especially when it comes around to Bonus time.
