I swear if I hear one more manager say "titles don’t matter" I'm going to lose my mind. Yes, they do. Because I'm not doing charity work above my pay grade, so sorry no we aren't all peers and if you want me to operate at a certain level, make me that level. Ugh.

You should tell them if it doesn’t matter then why aren’t we paid at the same grid ?

This is the correct answer

That's a controlling comment. And gaslighting too.

like

You misunderstand what they mean.
They are saying you don’t need to give deference to others based on title, you can offer ideas, suggestions, requests.
As for your position on being assigned tasks, you can usually refuse certain work and stay being lower paid if you prefer it that way

If she was taking on the role of someone who left, that’s not ok, she should reasonably got promoted and got the pay rise.
If she was growing into the more senior role then it’s the nature of (mostly) annual cycle of promotions.

They say “titles don’t matter”. I say neither does their opinion.

Heard this many times. Ignore it.

Gaslighting in many orgs.

Matters to me. I want different titles so I built my resume to show my story of how I progressed / advanced / abilities and pay. Then I can sell my career story as I interview for the next step in my career!

Is it because some titles have overlapped the salary range? Idk but I just asked

This is wild. I’ve heard that and it made me feel good. My directors/managers were willing to get their hands dirty on the same projects I worked on at a lower level. It made me feel like we were a team.

Of course it does, especially when it comes around to Bonus time.

Thoughts on “special” salary grades. I just found out the VP I was offered is not a grade 12 like most comparable roles (verified). Also not an 11, but an 11A. Slightly higher than an 11, a good bit lower than a 12. All due to the fact that it’s a leap from my current position. Why should that matter…..shouldn’t it pay what it should pay if I am selected, rather that curving down towards my current rate?
