Your job as a leader is to set your subordinates up for success— great job! Time for bigger and better things for you.

Exactly!

That should not reflect poorly on you in an ideal world. Find a way to spin it as a positive story at year end if needed

Step aside and let the don through
I think you're framing it wrong. I got promoted to SM this year, and my best SC (and counselee BTW) got promoted to M (I had an active role on that).
My first conversation with him afterwards was "ok, now let's keep working together so that in two years from now you become SM and I become D".
You shouldn't fear your people; rely on them instead. But of course, beware the backstabbers, and repay in kind if needed.
Only when really pushed, D1 😉
I really like to help other people out, and value the power of the community. But I've grown really sick of those taking advantage of the good people in the world.
That’s good management. Now step your game up!

This seems to misunderstand how things operate they didn’t steal the role from you.
Either you set them up for success to quickly move up the ranks (good for both of you)
or you were not good enough and they needed to jump in and take over (good for them and bad for you)
I would ask the SM to have a candid discussion and then figure out next steps.

Now you are free

Sounds like a Deloitte kind of feeling
No--you helped your SC grow and thrive. You've already done this role so it's time to do something else. Contributed to development of next generation of leaders which is preparing you for new roles. Ask your coach for help writing this story---it's good!
Thanks. My coach is a leader on the project and is the one asking me to leave because there's nothing better for me. Now I'm wondering why that same favor can't be delivered to me - it doesn't seem like the norm which is why I'm wondering if I acted too soon.
SC is really good and ready for M but I didn't appreciate how they'd kept me out of the loop in an issue and used that to level up.
Yeah it's good. However it doesn't get rewarded, it's seen as replaceable.
SM and D are close, SC took the M spot and I'm left behind. If this is the kind of people managers we want to grow in the firm, shouldn't this be recognized and rewarded? I guess I should've found a nice SM I can suck up to take their spot.
I was in a Deloitte-sponsored industry conference and we had a discussion on what great leadership is, and someone mentioned “A good leader is when the leader is absent, the team is still able to do the work” and that hits home.
You nurtured your SC and your SC delivered. Good job! Your course of work is done there, and now you can move onto the next challenge, onto bigger and better fishes to fry 🙂 all the power to you.
If SC stole it with you being there then SC was the right person for that role to begin with
