I used to be a screw up. My brother in law knows all about it. I'm doing well now and I'm in a (not publicly visible) role in a public agency. My brother in law occasionally makes fun of me; I don't care because I'm finally doing well for myself, but sometimes I worry that if my sister divorces him he'll make it his job to gossip about me. He already gossips about my purchases/ talks down to me. I don't reprimand him because he does it around my 2 year old niece who currently adores me.

When someone tells me bad news regarding their health, I say everything I am supposed to say (I’m sorry to hear that, I’m here for you, etc) EXCEPT “everything is going to be ok”. I’ve been negotiating a settlement on behalf of a client. OP is a major corp. we’ve gone back and forth for months, almost a year. Finally came to a final agreement and we’re reviewing for final signature. Then client is reviewing and decides they want something else modified. It’s a point of contention. OP has said no. Should I communicate this to client before pushing back against OP’s rejection of the mod?
