People can change.
He seems like an ass.
If he's already talking about you to your face, I can guarantee that ship has already sailed. He's been talking about you behind your back for longer than he's done it to your face.
It seems your niece is too young at this point to understand what he's taking about. I'd focus on being the best uncle possible and continue to improve yourself. When she's older and understands what he's saying, hopefully she won't give weight to old gossip because her knowledge of who you are as a person will contract any negative things her dad has said about you.
I'm sure he's talking behind my back about me. His friends gave me a weird look whenever I went to a gathering with them. Luckily frankly I don't travel in the same circles so it's not a big deal.
Best way to beat this kind of gossip is just to stay focused on doing well for yourself in all areas of your life. The kind of people you want in your life aren’t going to care about your past at all unless you’re giving them a reason to be concerned about it currently.
A lot of people do this because they are trying to cover up their own insecurities. Once you find theirs and hit back just once - it will lessen. People like that can dish it out but they can’t take it.
