I want to ask for a pay increase but don’t know the range. I’m 2 years out of law school, and making 70k in ATL. I want to ask for 80, is that market? I’ve seen 3-5 years at smaller companies for 90-120.

You are underpaid. My wife worked for a $13 billion private company with a 20-30 person legal department and they started her at $75k then has her do the work of 1.5-2 people. I say that not as a point of comparison but everyone knew they were vastly underpaid there. She now is above $100k in a job that is far less demanding. You should be at the range you provided above and if you are not averse to leaving I would look around. You don’t even have to leave but see if you can get an offer elsewhere and you’ll know your value at that point. You’re a lot more valuable than you think, particularly since they seem to be cheaping out on the legal department.

Switch companies at year 3. You’ll see a huge bump in pay. It seems that if companies bring you on as in house when you’re just out of law school, they think they can pay you pennies. Take the win of going in house so early, but leave soon to get back to market rate pay. They will never bring you up to market hat the current company.

This. So much this. I’m in my third year at the company that hired me straight out of school. I’m asking them to come up to market (about a $25k bump) and looking around to see what I can get. Highly unlikely they’ll come up without a competing offer.

You definitely are underpaid.

Both seem very low. What do you do?

Sorry I should have been more specific, I’m in-house counsel right now. I do a lot of contract review but am also involved with our litigation, corporate governance, HR issues, policy management.

What kind of company do you work for? Large, small, how big is the legal department? What industry?

I work for a large consumer goods company, legal team is tiny, it’s me and my boss, we definitely need to hire one more person. So we both work 10-12 hours days (which I don’t mind at all and is not the reason for why I want the pay increase)

Worked at a non profit as the only atty in ATL and made $80k four years out of law school.

Is it a public co? Can you see what your boss makes based on public disclosures?

I lived in a similar cost of living city at my first in-house job. 5b in revenue, legal dept ~65. I was 2 years out making 105k but I know that was on the low end. I had other colleagues making 120k. 70 seems very low unless it’s a non profit

Not a public company. I know they based my salary off the paralegal, I just don’t know what to counter with. I struggle with imposter syndrome, so while I think I’m worth at least 80, I need help making that argument haha

Oh wow incredible, I looked at Baker and they didn’t have it.

Ignore these people. This is in market for Atlanta with that experience. I live here.

I would agree but I keep seeing job postings for someone with 3-5 years starting at 90, that’ll be me next year. A 20k increase seems steep for one year more of experience

Is there anyone in HR that can clarify this for me a little- Hawaii is a state that prohibits future employers from asking your salary. How does this apply to remote positions? Is it only based on the home state of the company? Or would it apply because I am applying from Hawaii?

Hello fishes,

Can anyone reffer me for SOC Analyst?

It’s hard to trust the partners/leadership when they want us to return to office as being better when we increase offshoring? Also, the pressure on billable hours when all that really matters is how much our fixed labor costs vs. how much we can bill (which is usually fixed fee or at least a range) and the fixed labor costs of offshoring is significantly cheaper so the hours don’t matter. Am I mistaken by this viewpoint?

Considering an offer to go from firm (4 YOE) to become a privacy/product counsel for a tech company (non-faang). One concern for me is the potential of a recession in late 22 into 23 with the fed rate hikes. My fear is if that happens, me being on the chopping block as new in house counsel. If I stayed at the firm, I feel reasonably secure as an associate of not being laid off due to the market. How do in house counsel positions typically fare during lay off cycles? Any experiences to share?

Salary check. I am currently an in house attorney. 12 YOE. Large company with great coworkers doing regulatory work for the insurance industry. Good work life balance. I live in a high COL city. Out of curiosity and to test the market, I interviewed at a FAANG. Did not get the job, but found out TC was 350k, significantly higher than my TC 230k. I thought I was compensated fairly, but would love to see your thoughts.
