I’m at something of a crossroads. I’ve been at an AmLaw 100 firm for several years now. I’m up for partner next year, but work is drying up and I don’t think partner is a realistic possibility, I think in part because of a skill gap between my class year (7th) and where I actually feel I should be (4th or 5th; came from a NJ firm, and Covid paused all development for 1.5 years before i made the jump to NYC). So I’ve started looking for opportunities. I could very well stay in big law, drop down a couple of years, get paid market and be making more than I am at my current firm. But maybe this is my chance to get out of big law and go to a smaller shop. We have three kids and being a present father is my #1 priority, but I’ve been doing pretty decently in terms of WLB. Part of me says suck it up for another 3-4 years and then get out, while the other part of me says to downsize.

One thing is if you are a 7th year and want to lateral, you likely need to start looking before the year change. Happy to chat (feel free to DM), but once someone is technically an 8th year, it is very hard to get any firms to consider them without portables. For the small firms, the comp is too high. For the big firms, you are too close to partnership. It’s certainly possible, but once the year changes even getting someone to look at your materials gets trickier.

like

You’re probably actually above a 4th/5th year. A lot of this becomes project management at a point and making sure things get done. If you take a class year cut though you’ll make it back quickly and it is not as huge as you think after you take into account how brutal our taxes are.

like

Lateraling to an even bigger firm at your class year may be difficult.

I'm in CapM and am intending to take a year cut to protect my career. Personally, I'd see how your review goes and then decide whether to stay for another year and see if you make partner next time around, ask for a counsel role if you can move to partner from there someday or ask for a cut to fill in the gaps...

Or talk to the partners now.

How are you considering approaching the year cut? Will you ask for it and how?

I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?

My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at
Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.

L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

Foreign LLM student here. I plan to take the NY bar exam in February. I’m thinking of taking a bar prep course (most likely Barbri). They offer two options: the “traditional” course (which lasts around 2.5 months) and an extended 6-month course. The difference in price is substantial – 2.5k for the traditional course vs 6k for the extended one. Any thoughts/recommendations on which one I should take? In case it is helpful, I come from a civil law country. Thanks!

Partners - Do you ever take vacations?

I have been at my current firm for about 1.5 years, and in that entire time the partner in my group hasn't been out of the office a single time. Is that normal? I can't tell if it's standard for big law partners to not take time off, if the dynamics for my group may be different (only 1 partner in the entire group), or it the partner I work with is just a masochist.

like

What length of vacation do you usually take? I’m a big fan of taking many 4 day weekends (instead of 1 or 2 longer vacays) but apparently those aren’t encouraged in the Big Law world?
