I'm considering a job change from my well regarded commercial litigation firm to a more relaxed, WFH ID firm. My current billable requirement is 2000, but for partnership it seems to be 2200+. There's no work from home, and there's an old fashioned dress code.

I like the complexity of the work I do, but I don't want to kill myself to make a living. Plus, my current salary is below market, so a move would come with a significant raise.

Is it crazy to give up prestige for a better life?

Think of the lifestyle you want and the salary you need to get it. If ID will pay you that salary then good luck!! However, ID firms get labeled sweatshops for good reason…you will be pushed to bill +2000hrs/yr for a salary (and bonus) that won’t be worth it after 1yr.

like

Aside from cautioning you regarding the churn and burn nature of ID firms… 👏🏻👏🏻to you for moving to an ID firm and getting a pay RAISE!

like

Not if you really think a move to ID will result in a better life. But are you certain the ID firm will get you the better life?

Be careful with that switch. ID can be pretty soul sucking. Writing so many reports, being micromanaged, not being trusted, non-attorney adjusters second guessing legal decisions. This may not be everyone’s experience, but it’s seeming more and more common. It may be that the hours are less, but I find that the stress from ID clouds my other time. (Maybe you’re just catching me in a bout of depression!) that said, if it’s right for you, you’re the only one who can know that, and you should trust that. Just go in with eyes open

I gave up prestige for more work life balance I briefly went back to a firm absolutely hated it and now I'm at a job where I don't make a ton of money but I like the way I live. For me it's worth it.

Did you ever make the move OP? I recently moved from ID to BL and I *surprisingly* miss my ID shop

I have a few questions for people in consulting roles (both external/internal).

My partner is in corporate banking, but he wants to switch to a consulting/strategy-based role. I noticed people with those jobs typically have an MBA, and also majority of the job ads in similar roles has MBA as either a requirement or preferred qualification. So:

1) does MBA actually improve someone's chance in getting those roles?
2) are there any good Canadian MBA programs you'd recommend?

Thank you all!

I've done so well in this new role within the company that they are hiring another person to assist with what I do. I've voiced to my boss that I'd like to manage this department and they indicated that this is the thought for the future. Now they are asking me to train this person while I have my plate full. Is it wrong for me to expect either a promotion or to be paid to train this person?

Anyone else get frustrated when the partner brags about their billable hour amount for the month? Like congrats, you get to bill .2 for each piece of mail. You also get .2 for every letter your secretary types up as a "form letter" you never even look at. As an Associate, I don't get those easy/automatic hours.
