Are you still an associate? It sounds like you’re still at the entry level. If that’s the case, really anything is open to you. You could probably network your way to audit or another practice within your firm, or leave PA altogether and take an entry level job in accounting/finance. If you haven’t been promoted, I don’t think your experience will get you off the entry level for most jobs in industry at this point. If you’re still at the staff level, I don’t think you’re stuck in tax. Most of the jobs you’d be applying for aren’t bringing you in for your expertise. Deloitte will look nice on your resume; I don’t think a year in tax will matter if you’re applying to staff accountant or financial analyst roles.
What attracted you to tax to begin with? I’d try to identify that and other stuff you are interested in doing. Then do some research on what other career paths provide for those. And FWIW, there’s a lot of areas within tax that provide for different experiences. So just because you don’t like one area, doesn’t mean you’ll dislike all areas. Could give other areas of tax a try.
I felt the same when I first started out at Deloitte tax. Are you part of BTS and doing compliance? I had buddies who transferred to Audit at another big4, moved to consulting like finance transformation etc. if you are within 1-2 years, network a lot of and try to figure out which work you want to do. Since you have Deloitte on your resume and are still early in your career, it should be relatively easy to switch.
