Any chance you can frame it in a way that leverages letters of recommendation. Like telling them that you would love to be able to speak to their communication skills, and/or ability to defend a claim verbally when it comes time to write them.
With my seniors, I begin each class with a, 'What is one thing you remember from our last session, GO!' and then I also have senior talks where each class begins with a 'life question' about fears, concerns, or post-college thoughts that we take 10minutes to discuss; they seem to enjoy these moments.
I turn off mute when students join.
I had my seniors participate in a show and tell and gave them a few extra credit points to get them warmed up to participating—you can use a theme like favorite thing or pets, etc.. Then, I put 3 to 4 students in breakout rooms to discuss a short list of questions, and then bring them back to the whole group with a spokesperson for each group to share out. They rotate the spokesperson each time. This has worked pretty well for me.
I’ll give the juniors and seniors in the elective I teach 3-4 discussion questions to work on in breakout groups. Then I’ll ask them to pick two members who are willing to turn on their cameras to be the representatives of their groups when we return for the whole class discussion. Other members of the class who might be shy to put on their cameras can participate through the chat.
Not sure if you are using Nearpod or not, but Nearpod collaborative boards are a great way to get students sharing information.
My students don’t even talk to me let alone discuss. I hate the teacher I had to be due to the pandemic. My standards are so low and I still have students failing especially this last quarter. They are checked out. Good luck!
