Look up their Q3 and Q4 guidance (if publicly traded) and ask how the firm is doing relative o that guidance.
I think it’s actually an astute question to ask a hiring manager. Something like how you posed it in your post, “if we enter a recession for x number of quarters, would you expect there to be layoffs in this group and how would that be handled?”
I wouldn’t expect a recruiter to necessarily have that insight.
Someone pointed out reviewing financials. That can help at a high-level, but not all groups may fare the same when it comes to recession-induced layoffs.
I’m a recruiter - can confirm they wouldn’t give us a heads up if layoffs were on the table.
