First of all, congrats!! My perspective as a woman: I don’t think a proposal should really be a surprise. I think you should already know enough about how each of you feels about marriage to know whether the other person would say yes if asked, and for them to feel prepared for the question. So I think having “the talk” first will up the chances of her saying yes dramatically. Also maybe it is just me but I would want to have input on the ring…personally I’d want to shop together or even buy it myself, but at the very least we’d have a detailed discussion about what I like and want in a ring, and that’s part of “the talk.”
As far as local shops, there is a place called Maloys where you can design your own ring that is pretty popular.
Chiming in to agree -- pick out the ring together!
I think the only risky thing about a Valentines day proposal is that your anniversary will also be on valentines day, which is always a tough day to get reservations, bookings etc. It can be expensive if you don't do it ahead of time every year. Other than that, I think it's romantic! Knowing the women in my life she's probably hoping you'll propose, best of luck!
I was just going to say this. I actually got married on Valentines day and never minded that our anniversary was on that day. We always make reservations way ahead of time.
You should chat with your partner and feel out the Valentine’s Day thing - that’s a HARD no for me, but I can see a ton of other women being super into it.
I personally think it’s more fun to have a special day for you that’s not the day for everyone’s love, but if you two are super into Valentine’s then it’s fun.
Also - I don’t know much about jewelers but is that enough time for them to get the ring made?
Either way, I’m sure she’ll be stoked - congratulations!! 💍🥂
I too am a woman and I second Maloys they have some of the most beautiful rings and they are all one of a kind too.
In Becker’s CPA training, they would advise against this. If things go south, legally she could claim the ring was a Valentine’s Day gift and not give it back.
First let me say congratulations!! If you've been going out for 4 years and she hasn't made any obvious comments about wanting to break up or stay uncommitted, I would say chances are super high she'll say yes. I like Alchemy Jewelers on Lovejoy St, not positive they do diamonds but I'm sure they do engagement rings!
Twist has an amazing selection of fine jewelry from alternative designers. I live in SF and don’t have a store here that carries all these amazing folks. Definitely worth a look in the engagement ring section.
My parents are partial to going Dyke Vandenburgh in LO to make them custom pieces
Betsy and Iya or Malka would be my go to places
Twist! I got my engagement ring and wedding band from there. Great employees that will email you recs and no pressure to purchase. My husband picked his band there but we purchased it elsewhere.
