I’m looking for some advice of what to apply to as an MBA (Top 10 US) looking to enter McKinsey. I have a background in product management and want to pursue this, which would be a practice consultant role. However, I have student loans and honestly want to be able to work my way up reasonably quickly. Does practice pay MBA entrants less than generalist? And would I be held back from progressing so quickly if I specialised in Product?

For questions as to why you are looking to leave your current firm.. I am looking to move because for some reason I am hand-held a lot and given simpler tasks, so I am getting bored and want more challenging / much more fast paced environment. Also kind of bored because I am on one project for a long time and I want exposure to variety of projects. Is this a fair answer or would I be seen as arrogant? Currently a first year staff in Risk Advisory in a Mid-Tier Firm hoping to move to Big 4 for either Risk or Cyber. When would be the most appropriate time to make the change? I heard that Senior Staff in mid-tier would most likely be hired as an “Experienced Hire” in Big 4. So would it be smarter to make the move now as a first year staff since I’ll be considered Experienced Hire anyway?
