I’m on PTO, and my manager on my project has texted me 3x today and called twice with questions that are easy to answer on their ow . Do I have to set boundaries?

I usually just say "I'm not going to be available during the day, but I should be able to check email at night every day or two if something critical comes up". Usually that makes them realize that if they have to wait for the end of the day for me, they might as well just figure it out themselves.

Yeah it's a tough spot to be in. I want to set boundaries and my instinct is to shut it down, but I would prefer to come off as reliable rather than inflexible.

like

Don’t forget to charge the project and reduce your pto hours

Think you already know the answer to that question.

I mean I want to set boundaries but in this political game of thrones world of consulting you never know

The truest thing I have read on here.

I know It’s a full time gig and you’re never really off, but these are questions like “did you update the file into Box” when all you have to do is look at the Date Modified column in Box to get that answer.

like

PTO is sacred; you are absolutely not expected to be available when on vacation, no matter what your job is.

like

It is a crime to bother someone on their PTO unless it’s an absolute emergency. Whatever happened to being respectful of someone’s personal time and space. We are not ER doctor or something nor are we saving any lives. I mean really WTF

likefunny

That’s why I got 2 phones. On PTO the work one goes in the drawer

likehelpful

Take some ownership and setup your team for success. It sounds like these questions take you about a minute to answer over text. What’s the harm in responding?

like

There's a difference between helping your team members out while you're on PTO and answering a simple question via text vs. multiple calls and texts on things that could be figured out. It's not appropriate to interrupt time off for things like this on multiple accounts and expect the person to pick up/respond. It should be a very last resort out of the utmost desperation where you've exhausted your other reasonable options....

like

Is there anyone else that you can point them to to answer these questions besides themselves. They might be in panick mode and just want to go to the source. If you can outline for example "Joe is familiar with the updates, if you have any further questions you can refer to him" etc

like

My condolences, I don't respond unless it's an emergency and the team should respect that.

For a while I also had the luxury of taking PTO in places with little/no cell service, or in the right timezone that they'd never reach out.

like

I don’t disagree with the folks saying set boundaries, and think 3 texts and 2 calls is at or across the excessive line, is it really that big of a deal to answer a “simple” question? I’m not talking about get on an hour long call but 4 seconds to respond to a few texts, 5 minutes on a couple phone calls isn’t really much of a problem to me.

like

I believe I addressed your point in the first sentence, lol.

I work with people who I know won’t call me on PTO unless it’s something they need me for. Maybe that’s the difference. I recognize that if I’m getting called it’s probably for something important, or specialized, enough to respond to.

Do they know that you’re on PTO? I definitely try to respect boundaries and protect PTO but I have been guilty of texting someone on PTO without thinking about it. There is no text vacation responder. When they responded they were on PTO I felt terrible. Could this be the case?

If not just ignore and say you didn’t have cell reception.

drop the phone in the toilet

You absolutely need to come back and set expectations with them when you’re on PTO. Maybe with this manager you have to go the extra mile to lay out a “contingency plan” so they have something to reference. Every manager/supervisor is going to have their own style. PTO is your time off, be selfish about it.

Assuming you gave a reasonable heads up to the manager and have your OOO up, I would have expect it to say please reach out to xx for questions about ____. Then I would not answer texts and calls all day but at the end of the night, take a look at all work related messages and try to respond to the quick ones in preparation for tomorrow.

In as much as you want to sent boundaries, u have to be careful not to burn yourself because u are in the business of consulting and as much as they preach about work - life balance, it doesn't always work.

Plus if you say it is easy to answer or resolve, just do it for him/her, it makes you valuable & resourceful
#JustMyThought

I always provide my phone number and say they -can- text with problems. But I also say I may or may not respond. And if I don’t respond, it’s because I don’t want to or shouldn’t need to.

Read them at night and respond/answer if they are really simple.. it if requires thought or actual work then yea try to refer them to someone else
