In my observation so many people are focused on promotions and next steps. The way to get recognized is to be a top performer and focus on the task at hand. Be positive and proactive. Getting promoted and moving up will naturally happen when your focus is on producing excellent work.

Grow your expertise to a point where people turn to you on a particular subject/industry. If you are the reference, internally and then to clients you will climb the ranks

Thanks. We have 5 sub service lines. Should I ask the partner what’s the most important subject or growing the most and focus on that ?

Consistently try to out perform your team but try to be on good terms with them too. Observe and retain your team lead or manager's leadership style, if it's effective, so that when he/she moves on, you'll be considered for the roll.

Speaking from experience 🙂

Considering joining a small 50-person company as the only attorney (prior attorney is retiring). (I am currently in-house at a F50). For others who have done the same path, what surprises did you have when moving from a large company to a small one?

For example, it sounds like I should not expect a document management system, based on a prior post in this bowl. I’m guessing expenses like state bar fees and cell phone are not reimbursed.

Any advice on things to expect (or not expect)?
