SF, not San Fran - saving you some grief
I would never live in SF proper with kids. The surrounding suburbs have better schools, better parks, and more family oriented communities, and most likely less costly.
SF is a freaking pit. Last time I was up there, visiting a nice neighborhood, I walked past people openly shooting up drugs on the street corner, plus used needles, trash, and human feces

Born and raised in SF. Some neighborhoods aren’t the safest. I would recommend looking at Sunset/Richmond district. Those are more residential, safer, and have great restaurants and stores. Marina, or pacific heights are nice too, but busier
SF born and raised as are a few other responses here. I’d really suggest living in the area and communing into the city if you’re moving to the area for work. Berkeley, Sausalito, Walnut Creek, etc. If money is no object and you really want to live in the city itself I personally like the Presidio and Vista Del Mar ( close to sunset/Richmond )
I think the concept of "safety" depends on where you're moving from.
