I know someone who did this and another who was a the habeas clerk in a federal district court. These individuals both got a lot out of their time and enjoyed the experience. I see it described on resumes as “law clerk in the Staff Attorney’s office.”
Whether the trade off is worth it depends on what you’re doing at your firm now. Are you getting a lot of substantive experience with writing? Is that something you want? Coming back from one of these staff attorney gigs would give you more credibility with writing and issue spotting.
