I’m trying to figure out what a “reasonable” amount of time is for doc review/prepping a med chron in ID. A plaintiff just disclosed over 20k pages of medical records and I just saw the carrier cut all of my time for doc review in December (before the extra 20k) because it was “excessive.” I average 30-50 pages an hour, depending on the type of treatment records. Is that excessive? I get that would be minimum 400 hours for 20k pages, but it has to be done and I don’t know how to do it faster

30 to 50 pages an hour is pretty slow imo I read about 200 an hour

like

After a few years you know which records matter. For example, if you’re dealing with ortho/neuro injuries and it’s a lengthy hospital admission you can usually skim through orders and focus on progress notes.

PT, Chiro, and Acupuncture records are also generally useless outside of identifying gaps in treatments.

Hard to give an average but it’s usually 200 per hour although I certainly need to massage my billing to account for other, necessary tasks that are deemed “non billable”.

As for the cuts- you need to make sure you’re not billing more hours than they allow for in a certain day. Some will only allow 8 or 10 hours per day and that is across all your matters for the carrier

like

It takes however long it takes. Some records are faster to review and summarize than others. If you have a good partner on the case, you might suggest they contact the carrier, explain the situation, and get approval for the time in advance.

I ballpark 100 pages and hour and check after 5 hours of work to see where we are at, it’s never accurate though.

Try a nurse paralegal is cheaper and does understand medical documents. I have been reading nurses notes, doctor notes and surgical notes for 22 years of being a wound care nurse. I have done medical research as well as legal and I will not charge you like a doctor

I would say 100 pages per hour at the lowest

I currently work at a small PI firm in Atlanta were EVERYTHING is settled presuit. If we’re unable to settle, then it’s referred to another firm for litigation. This whole process seems very atypical to me and the attorneys rarely touch a file until the first liability offer is received. The paralegals handle everything from intake to drafting the demands. The attorney briefly skims (does NOT read) the demand packages and signs. Is this ethical?? Anyone else work at a firm that is run this way??

I also take the driver seat for the grunt work on the firms bigger cases which are at or near 7 figure value. I constantly feel (cont.)
