I'm United 1k and at 87k this week, but just rolled off project. Don't know next assignment. United people, worth doing miles run(s) to retain the 1k?

Yup, take a hop to Asia for a few days. That's what I did last year

GPU requires W class and above to use. You can search for those fares. You will auto confirm in business when you use a GPU if R class is available

like

Had this same discussion with my team, agreement was a resounding no. One main reason was GPUs are impossible to use.

like

Too early to pay for miles.... wait till November before buying your way to 1K

like

Benefits I've used include changing flights in that 24 hour period before flight $0 change fee, almost always first person on standby list when I need to go that route, and I think I am 100% on using GPUs for self and family with me. I look at cabin configurations before I book, and make sure that there are plenty of business first seating still open. The only times I haven't been able to use are when I gave to other travelers who don't have the same status. (Should have booked our friends with our reservation to have my 1k apply). Also use Regionals with great ease to Mexico. Usually get confirmed upgrade as I book.

like

I would say yes. You get a bump in earning miles from 1k to platinum. It's ~20% more earning potential. The dedicated 1K line is a major plus. GPUs are tough to use but you can always use them as RPUs or sell them. You get a bump in RPUs when you make 1K. Higher probability of automatic upgrades at 1K level vs Platinum

I'm 1K with 127K (102 segments) and about $55K year to date and considering mileage runs to ensure GS in February selection process, so I would say yes to maintaining it.

I'm doing hops on shuttles now so my mileage is going to be flat

@A1 - mileage isn't going to make a difference. It's all about the spend for GS

Why are gpu's impossible to use?

GPUs impossible as 1K because of fare class restrictions, unless you are GS

@A1 your spend per mile seems like you have a good chance to retain GS. I'm sad, at this point I think I have no hope in retaining GS. Not enough international travel this year.

EWR to Jakarta for $469 will do the trick! http://www.theflightdeal.com/2016/10/01/united-469-newark-jakarta-indonesia-roundtrip-including-all-taxes/

Let me put this way--if there's a sale to Asia for $500, you have to book the fare that's $1k or more to use your GPUs. There's no advantage to 1k under the new system
