Tell them to pay you for it
No assignments. Unless they are paid for. You know how it works - you pay for shit in life. Would you visit a restaurant and ask for a test meal?
To answer your questions yes, yes and yes. I see this question posted more and more so it sounds like a lot of places are starting to use this approach. And if you ever interview for inhouse you can almost expect it. But it does serve a purpose: they want to make sure you're as good as your book, and aren't just talking a big game. In the past, I've seen people hired who couldn't write a headline to their name flounder all because they couldn't deliver. If you want the job bad enough, do the assignment. If you don't, move on. Not sure if asking if the assignment can be paid is going to land you favor, so proceed in either direction carefully.
Agree 100% . They’re a necessary evil. The problem with relying on just a portfolio is many time people want to see experience in a specific category and if they don’t see it, you’re dismissed.
Also, if you haven’t gotten to work on cool projects, what will you have to show?
Don’t ask them to pay you for it. That’s tacky. If you’re book is strong enough, that should suffice… but if it’s not… just do the assignment if you really want the job.
nah
No.
It definitely shouldn't be a thing, but I agree with Copywriter 1. Ballpark how many hours you'd spend and then name your price. (only if you really want the job) How they respond will tell you whether they're worth talking to in the first place.
