Hi! I’m a frequent interviewer. Practice basic behavioral interview questions and think of the scenarios that you’ve experienced that would answer those top questions in a structured clear way. At the interview, be authentic, friendly, know specifically why you want to join the firm or the group, and you’re golden.
The case studies focus on things like growth strategy and market sizing!
OP - the behavioral is more of a check for problems. Our process really comes down to the case interviews. There is a ton of information out there on our case process and I assume you know a few associates at the firm you can reach out to. Crush case and you are good to go. Miss case and no behavioral will help you.
Now, i have seen folks lose out because of their behavioral interview but that takes a pretty special type of attitude and person :)
In terms of what to say? Well we are not hiring CDD experts (OK we are definitely interested in hiring CDD experts, particularly those w/ 3-5 years experience who like doing CDD and if you are a competent CDD team leader....well welcome!) but rather strategists. Brush up on your strategy frameworks, etc.
Also, your note seems to be apologetic - don't apologize for your background ever! You have been in the muck of M&A and your assurance background allows you to understand how firms convert market efforts into NI and cash (god knows 4/5ths of the MBAs I hire cannot make their way around a P&L let alone a balance sheet) and have a sharp nose for process flaws. Those experiences leave you hungry for the next step in your career - looking at the world through a strategy lens.
Now, throw some "One EY" red meat in there and note that your experience has taught you that the operational details matter and you want to be at a firm that possesses both strategy and all of the requisite expertise to then translate that strategy into action. And, while you may not be there in your career yet, that is the vision you have for where you will be in the future.
Have a lot of experience in a given vertical? Start talking about wanting to deepen that too. But, don't BS there - many of your interviewers are likely to be very deep in your vertical and can smell BS at a distance.
Relax about the behavioral - the standard is "smart, nice, and driven". Be yourself - you wouldn't be where you are w/o smart and the application indicates you are driven...so be nice :)
But, in the end, allocate 9/10ths of you energy to prepping for the cases.
Good Luck! We need more Senior A's!
Good Luck! I applied to Consultant role as well. How many days or weeks does it take for you to hear back from HR?
How about from interviews to offer? How long did it take?
What EY-Parthenon 2 said is consistent with my experience. Rather than framing your story around your lack of direct CDD exposure, structure your story around your assurance and M&A foundation and how those projects have both given you an understanding of business and transactions, as well as a desire to go full CDDs or other strat projects.
In terms of case prep, practice market sizing, CDD, and profitability cases. Beyond your standard case frameworks, RocketBlocks is a great resource to practice running through CDD type graphs and inferring trends and insights quickly.
This is super helpful. What are some example of CDD type cases and graphs? I am also on RocketBlocks.
How did interview go??
