I’ve had the good fortune to be able to move from blue-collar to white-collar work; I will gross ~13x this year what I did in my last year in the trades, which is an inflation-adjusted increase of 860%. While I’ve adjusted my standard of living upward somewhat (cleaning person, newer cars, many more things falling into the category of “the small stuff”) we haven’t made great lifestyle spending changes. Having had the perspectives of both relative poverty and relative wealth, I am most disturbed by the complete lack of awareness of those less fortunate that is exemplified by turning up one’s nose at a $1000 watch. It screams “I deserve this watch and more,” without any recognition of the immense good fortune to be in a job that pays so well that you can complain about the flavor of expensive gift being offered.
TLDR; not generational, but wealtherational - never having been poor leads to entitlement.
I'm not sure why we should salivate at stupid little perks/benefits companies pretend to offer when we know they walk away with the lion's share of the profits we help produce. It would be fine to do away with pretend benefits/perks and just increase everybody's compensation or not continue to foster a culture of chronically overworking. This has nothing to do with young people or old people, but rather speaks to the raising consciousness of workers as a whole. We come out of a global pandemic and companies are mostly operating as if we didn't all collectively go through an insane period together. Geez.
I wouldn't call it entitlement at all. Rather a generational gap in what older folks value vs. younger generations.
At BofA, we occasionally get "appreciation points" to redeem for horrible items in a catalog which are overpriced for the redemption cost. For example: Apple AirPods w/ charging case is $160 at Target, but to redeem in the portal costs the equivalent of $230 of points.
As a younger 40-something, I feel these redemptions are a relic of past generations.
😂this kills me. The whole first part of my career I worked in the depths of hell. People who started at fb and have only ever worked at fb, I’m like “you don’t know how good you have it with these benefits and perks….” I’ve def seen some AUDACITY tho and it’s crazy (and annoying af)
I understand the need for better pay, health & wellness benefits and overall better WLB. But complaining about not wanting an Apple Watch is weird to me 😕
I don't see this as entitlement. People know what they are worth and they have no issues with asking for something that's better for them. If a company is expecting them to work 70+ hours a week, why not get a little extra for themselves because after they are hired, the company won't do anything extra. I now work at a company that does the bare minimum, however, I get paid extremely well and am not required to work more than 35 hrs a week unless we're in a crunch and that's quite rare.
Its not just younger folks. At my first job out of college I was shocked that about 90% of my coworkers (all older than me) complained and tried to get out of an all expenses paid company retreat to Germany.
That sounds like a huge disruption to normal life, though. What if they had to take care of family, or were scared of flying, or had tricky medical conditions?
I’m a new grad 2 years out, and I gotta say I am actually shocked by the entitlement of the older generation at Google. I am still amazed by all the perks I get working here, but the older employees seem to take it for granted now, and constantly complain at company meetings about how google isn’t giving us enough. I think it’s just whatever you’re used to…
I'm in my 40s, but I would also be annoyed if I couldn't get a useable watch while the part of my colleagues sold to Apple does. Of course I would ask if it's possible to get an Android one. What's wrong with that?
Entitlement signals the fall to come! I see it everyday and in every way (in tech? Yes - also in this country and state and household and the world)!
The market is hot rn and companies are throwing out insane offers. Gotta stay competitive somehow bc people are hopping jobs more frequently now than ever
I'm conflicted as someone part of that demographic...but I think someone made a good point about valuing different things. I think you have to have perspective and empathy around how your actions might look like to someone else, but I also feel like you need to appreciate perks and benefits without comparing it to what others get. Idk, maybe because the company I'm at isn't generous enough to gift us Apple Watches so I feel this way haha
It's our generation, but I think we will get better with time and responsibilities
Wow. That might just be one person's lack of self-awareness...
100% - hey kid, you dont live at home with momma anymore... its time to grow up, and live in the real world.
Yesterday was my first day at my new job after being laid off from my previous engineering job. I was so thankful for the free lunch my boss got me. I can't imagine getting difficult over a free tech gift! Gotta be thankful to even have a job in this environment!
I remember when you had to prove yourself.
When there is 19424 unpaid work hours i can see a problem
I have an android and PC at home lol I would ask the same if my job offered to give me an apple watch. Granted I could sell the apple watch but still
