It's simple. 😉.
You listen to your customers. You actually solve their problems. And then you listen to your customers some more.
Income generating as in being profitable?
Start by delivering excellent work for a single client.
I love firearms and shooting in general, as well as teaching in some capacity. An opportunity to become a certified instructor came up so I invested a small amount and took the certification, then started with a few people I knew from work and the area building my classes. I worked hard on building a web presence for search engines to pick up locally, as well as social media exposure. I would reach out to our local media for special classes I was having and eventually landed a reporter who covered a whole day of a ladies only concealed pistol class. That file footage was used for over 5 years getting me even more free exposure on local tv. I've been doing this 10 years now, and at least half of my students come from word-of-mouth advertising. My students see my passion, and my assistant who is the same as me in perspective, and they appreciate our teaching of realistic, personal, and attitude towards firearms training, safety and absolute responsibility towards these defensive tools. It takes time to build anything solid, so don't get discouraged in the beginning of whatever it is you seek to do.
A second business model we've just launched last October was an axe throwing range. We approached this the same as above, using free media exposure whenever we can. I was just interview again last night for a new story about summer entertainment in the area. Don't be afraid to reach out to your local news casters and become familiar to them. You want to be the image that pops up in their mind when a subject familiar to your business comes up. With the axe range, we had to have our first brick-and-mortar business, so we searched till we could find a very affordable location. I used most of the lumber I had on hand to build the lanes, as well as found a local lumberjack with a home mill that could mill target and back boards. Once we were ready to open, I again reached out to our local media. The range was a HUGE success initially, but now we are in the summer slump (beaches and bonfires), so we are again hitting the media and airwaves as much as possible to get traffic indoors to our place. We've also been working with a rage room that opened down the mall from us to help each other bring traffic in. Don't be afraid to network with other people in your respective areas of interest.
