Is it legal for companies to make it nearly impossible for you to take your PTO? My manager has been declining my PTO requests without telling me why. I don’t know if I pissed him off or what, but it’s been months since I’ve had a break, I just need a few days off. Plus, these PTO days expire at the end of the year and it’s not like it will be easier to take time off as the holidays approach. How can I push back without risking my job?

There's no federal law about PTO, generally companies can set their own policies. Some states have laws that address the situation, you may be able to sue for wages if you're denied the time off. In a case like yours it's best to just stand up and explain you need to take the time before the end of the year. And, as you say, it's better to do it now than in December.

If it has been an ongoing situation it might be wise to involve your HR department.

Use the "family obligations card" to push back against your tool of a boss. I don't know about you but I wouldn't want to work for an employer who doesn't respect that!

My cashier position at the flea market on the weekends our PTO requests are approved or declined by our manager pretty much based on how many workers we have. I've already told her sternly yet subtly we'll all be burnt out soon. She went on to say she's not approving PTO until the beginning of next year. Similar situation to yours, kind of.

I need help. I'm dealing with multiple losses in the same week and having a hard time... I took some time off from work but I have no motivation to do anything. I don't want to go back to work and don't care about my work right now. I want to quit but I don't want to make a rash decision but need a long break. It's also not fair to my team that I can't give it my 100%. What can I do?

If buy the partners you work with regularly a holiday gift, how much do you spend? Usually I get baked goods or food items which you can’t tell the actual amount spent on. This year, though, I’d like to support local restaurants by encouraging people to order takeout—hence, giving gift cards.

How much is appropriate for a restaurant gift card from an associate to a partner?

Hey everyone, would 12/23 afternoon not a bad time for holiday travels? Booking for a flight for my parents from overseas to LAX ,trying to avoid crazy busy afternoon.

Is your firm treating 12/26 and 12/27 as firm holiday since the 24th and the 25th are during the weekend this year? Of course client demands would dictate whether people will be working, but curious what the official policy is. For what it’s worth, my firm treated the day after thanksgiving as holiday and I didn’t have to work for the whole day.

I work in a sucky IBM cic, making $54k. It’s a full time job with regular benefits and vacation etc, it’s working with government clients. The job isn’t what I applied for & constantly changes. I don’t like that, but I’m a full time employee which is “stable employment”. Btw, I’m in the DC area.

I just got hired for a government contract through Accenture for a Business Analyst role. Pay is $65 per hour. 3 year contract. Benefits too. No PTO. Holidays off with pay, after 90 days.

Thoughts?

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬
