Is there any easy way to bill for emails? At the end of each month I spend way too much time trying to collect the 0.1s from the month. I go day by day with my emails, sent then received. It’s so boring and time consuming but I have never known an easier way (aside from entering emails daily, but I find that doesn’t work either because if you get multiple emails on a case in a day, you’d have to keep editing the entry.) I feel it would be way easier/accurate to do that on a daily basis

Enter your time contemporaneously?

There’s an app called timebro which tracks it automatically. I don’t know what other software you use so can’t say for sure it will be helpful but worth checking out

I’ve been wishing for something like this to exist! Thank you! I’ll check it out

You could block bill the 0.1’s noting the descriptions of the communication and noting the total emails sent back and forth (particularly if you’re throwing a minor discount). E.g. billing 0.8 for 10 emails sent back and forth

like

I also use the end of month email billing to catch up on items I may have not remembered to follow up on. If the only answer is “bill contemporaneously” then maybe complete reading the original post before providing that response

I recommend you take a mini course on excel. It’s so useful for so many things. I use excel every day.

Is this when you can’t do block billing?

I’m in insurance defense litigation, so I used to be able to easily exceed my hours because I was in court and depositions every single day. Since the pandemic, it’s like pulling teeth to meet hours because NYC courts are still mostly closed. So unfortunately every little 0.1 matters. Even when it takes more than 0.1 to enter the billing.

Ask assistant to do it daily or every few days for you

.2 emails to and from xxx regarding yyy. If the conversation continues over several days so do my time entries. If it’s more than four emails with substance then I increase to a .3 or .4

I am a new associate (1 month in mid-tier firm) and I struggle to get work to fill up the whole day. In honest time, i get about 3-5 billable hours a day. Am I going to get in trouble or fired over this?? I am putting my best efforts when I do get work and I ask for work sometimes. At this point I feel like I am being annoying too…

What does bench life look like for you?
For me a typical day looks like this
9 am- sign in and check emails
930-11 : look for a new job
11-2 lunch and nap
2-3 : sometimes meetings, mostly begging people for billable work
3-4:30 - proposal work if I have it or more job hunting
5-9pm family time and dinner
10-3am - netflix, videogames, cry myself to sleep

Does anyone run a business in addition to their firm? I’m a solo and I’m doing pretty well with about 60-70 billable hours a month. Though that leaves a lot of downtime. Curious if anyone has any second businesses that require about 20 hours a week. Not looking for passive income or franchise ideas though.

I’ve been a freelance print production designer for many years, and usually on-site in the before times. Now I work remote, and am finding it uneasy dealing with billing. Before I always billed hourly, which made sense, but it’s becoming an issue now. Some companies don’t have a full days’ work, so it seems wrong to bill full days, and it allows me to juggle projects for different companies, but my billable hours are down. I know I should bill a daily rate, but not sure that will fly. Thoughts?

Is it just me or the average billable work in infrastructure transactions has blown off steam in the last couple of weeks?

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!

But lately I’m so tired of politics and toxicity that I it’s sent me into a depression tailspin, on top of a pretty severe mid-life crisis.
