You might be able to go the hr route and focus on benefits and compensation. I wish I had better benefits knowledge buts a small portion of what I do. Maybe going to work in finance or tax?
Definitely considering the HR route, but was wondering if there was any other options as a practicing attorney. I’d like to put this law degree to some use if I can!
What type of firm do you work at? If you’re at an M&A shop, options likely are pretty limited
OP same here… v10, 99% m&a/transactional
I see it as a component a lot of broader in house positions. Also once you’re ready to pull the plug I’d start reaching out at your firm to let people know you’re interested in in house. Never hurts to place a well liked associate in a place where they’ll be greatful and control hiring.
The juniors who I’ve known did it through existing clients. Not sure how much if at all partners greased the wheel. People who have been pushed out as juniors it’s mixed. Sometimes partners helped a lot. Other times it was just “You get three months. Best of luck!”

Super helpful!
I’m in the same boat. No clue what to do.
There’s got to be a space for us somewhere outside of Big Law!
Patagonia is hiring an employment counsel right now and looking for someone with 2-5 years of experience…! It’s posted on LinkedIn.
Is there any part of exec comp you like? I just left practicing exec comp in big law and am hoping to transition to do employment law (advice and counsel, not so much litigation since I was transactional) at smaller, boutique type of place since that’s what I really like from exec comp. There’s also doing exec comp at non-big law firms? Some junior in-house comp roles do come up from time to time or maybe becoming a compensation consultant ?
You can definitely go the VP, Comp & Benefits route in-house.
I have been there, done that! I just started reading the group on fishbowl today and I have shared this a lot! I love the law and helping people but the job was not what I wanted. I ended up starting a legal resource brokerage. I help a lot of people and make much better money but do not have to do the tedious part of the job! The biggest part of my practice if offering my services as a legal benefit for employee's benefit package. Think outside of the box is the best advice I can give.
