Yes, pretty consistently our clients look to us to lead the marketing aspect of their businesses. The few who wield their position of ‘the one who writes the check’ as a weapon are the ones who are institutionally dysfunctional or are functionaries who aren’t empowered to make meaningful marketing decisions.
2 out of 3 of my clients are very trusting partners. I’d say I’m lucky.
I serve 4 clients. For 3 of them, I'm running things. For the other one.... even they themselves can't agree with each other.
Yeah, the way I see it is: if everything was smooth sailing and the way I want it... this job is amazing, I want to keep it for 10 years... but if 2 parts out of 10 is not so great, I can Iive with that and it's what the money is for!
I freelance and I can always tell who is really running the show on any given account. Usually, the client is aware of it too and that person becomes the default go to on the brand. Downside is, clients often rotate off of the account after a while, and the new client may or may not love the person who was really in charge of the brand before.
