I’ve been wondering this but has anyone had any long term health effects from consulting? I think with all the long hours, stress, and everything else that comes with it that it is likely to have physical and mental health effects.

Stomach aches every morning when I wake up, anxiety, depression.

likeuplifting

I had this stomach ache for over a year and no doctor could diagnose the underlying cause. As soon as I left consulting my stomach ache disappeared! So yes, it has long term health impact for real.

I am in 30s and got diagnosed with coronary artery disease. Got stents placed in my heart. It is caused by 4 key factors,
1) Smoking - I never smoked
2) Stress - non-stop in consulting
3) High blood pressure - directly related to stress
4) Bad lipid levels - constantly traveling and eating whatever I get to complete the work on time

I decided to quit consulting right away. Started looking for jobs outside. Jumping the ship after holiday break.

A1 definitely get that checked out ASAP. Have heart disease history in my family and my family who are in the medical field always recommend checking early rather than later

Oh man. I’m sorry

Same, started seeing a chiropractor regularly, and it’s helped

Bad back, more general life anxiety (as opposed to event induced), depression etc

Yikes, I’m sorry 😞

There’s a reason so many consultants are quasi-alcoholics, or Health nuts… it is to offset the long-term effects of being abused.

Yikes but seems true

That’s capitalism for you

capitalism sucks but there are definitely jobs that won’t destroy your health

I don't know if I can draw a direct causation but consulting definitely made the below health issues worse -

Back pain, weight gain / obesity (yay for stress eating), anxiety, depression, cholesterol, greying hair

It's okay! Left recently. Hope things get better now. :)

Lower back pain

Yup. Probably not really long term, but brutal nonetheless…. Oh well, time to exit! 😂

like

Back pain from working labour for 2 years but regular exercise helps. When I joined consulting, I knew I could just go back doing labour if they’d treat me like crap. Savings helps to boost my mental health as well.

Oh man I’m sorry

Many people in this thread have mentioned anxiety as an effect of consulting and wanted to share that I’ve found taking short walks and prayer to be helpful for me as I deal with anxiety because of work. Maybe others can share what’s been helpful for them as well?

like

Grey hair, terrible quality of sleep, panic attack. Trying to recover and exit soon

like

Oh yikes… hope that you can get better soon!

I went from 20/20 vision to -4 in contacts, started getting grays around 24/25, and am always tense even when I try to relax. My personality also changed for the worse and I became a pessimist. So yeah it takes a toll on our health.

like

Yikes, hope things get better soon.

I got severe depression after working under a particularly brutal Accenture SM. Feeling much better now but took a lot of effort and a bout of medication to come back.

Sorry to hear that. Glad you’re feeling better

It hasn’t been bad for me. Nobody is shooting at me here. I’m retired military.

Was not caused by consulting but I definitely had to carefully manage my epilepsy during my consulting years

Oh yikes. Hopefully it’s better now

I had to learn to dial down the Xanax. I genuinely had no idea how other people could keep their cool with some clients without it. Beware, if you leave for industry, you could easily get a different flavor of toxic so be picky when accepting offers. Culture matters.

Very good point. I appreciate that perspective as I’m trying to exit

Anxiety (not caused - worsened) and intense lower back pain

Oh yikes sorry to hear that
