Need some advice here. I am a fullstack developer with 5 yoe in Angular and Python. My aim is to crack FAANG companies. Now I got an offer from HSBC in a credit risk model monitoring role using Python. It is close to a data engineer role.
My question is that will it be a good idea to shift from development role to a model monitoring role if I want to move to FAANG in the future?Or does FAANG not prefer people who are not in core development roles?Amazon Microsoft Google Adobe PwC EY Citi Barclays JPMorgan Chase

If you take the GC route, you can help make a difference by forcing outside counsel to use and promote attorneys of color if they want your business and want to retain it. Go to an in-house situation that will truly support you in that effort. I’m sorry that you are disappointed, but I am not sorry you are leaving that firm. This is an opportunity for you to go somewhere to succeed and make a difference. You wouldn’t have made it this far it you didn’t have it in you to succeed. Good Luck and God Bless!
This is the answer. When I was at my firm I was a beneficiary of exactly this kind of client, who brought me and my good work to the forefront. Now, in-house, I am cognizant of teams that lack diversity and people have to look at me and explain why that is. Obviously, my matter's success comes first, but if you're telling me you have 0 qualified women or racial minorities in the entire firm then it's equally obvious you have a cultural problem that needs to be addressed.
“Minor setback for a major come up” sounds like the right perspective to me. “Only thing stopping you is you” is inaccurate - we know these ceilings are real. GCs have a great hand at forcing external firms to do better, so that is a DEI advancing role if you make it one. What year are you? Lateraling into a direct partner role might be a possibility - or lateraling to a firm with a contractual promise of partnership (likely non-equity) in x amount of years also is a possibility. You know your worth, and you should be at a firm (or company) that recognizes it. Rejection is also redirection. It’s raw now, but I sincerely believe you’ll be at a better place in your life; this is just forcing your hand to get there sooner.
"Rejection is also redirection"
I love this.
I am so sorry. Do you think you have it in you to lateral and try again at a different firm? I know a few people have done this successfully.
Yeah it’s something to consider for sure. Right now the prospect of going through multiple years only to have the same outcome repeat itself is just too much to think about. But I’m still too raw from it all.
Did you find out why exactly there's no path for you? I agree with associate 1 that you might want to see if there's a path at another firm where you could realize your dream. I'm sorry it's feeling so discouraging right now :(
Why would you give business to the firm that fired you?
I HATE hearing this, and being an Attorney like yourself, I 100% understand how INFURIATING it can be knowing that the only reason you were passed up was because you too much melanin in your skin. Think about it this way though: You scare those "Partners" to death. They knew you were more than likely going to recruit more very qualified "Minority Attorneys" into "their" Firm (God Forbid). Why are their egos so easily threatened with the THOUGHT of more non-white Attorneys working with them?
Keep your head up OP. This could be a minor set back for a major come up. Stay strong and keep pushing!
I’m so sorry you had to go through this. I’m struggling with a similar decision - I have people who think I’m great, but not real sponsors and the firm is beginning to renege on negotiated terms, so I’m torn as to whether I can trust them to advance me.
I know it’s hard, but you’ll get through it. If you want to make Partner, there are other places that will value you. Don’t let them tell you what value you should place on yourself and where you should go. Take time to grieve, then approach your career with a clear head. It’ll be okay.
Thank you for telling me the truth I needed to hear. I’ll get on it. 👊🏾💪🏾
Just like Eagles, God makes use uncomfortable to make use move to the next level. God didn’t give you that dream so someone else can snatch it away. He’s ordering your steps! We don’t always understand His moves because He doesn’t tell us in details. Breathe! You’ll be okay!
SO sorry. FWIW, the only thing that can stop you is you. Sending you good vibes.
are you a woman as well? i feel like its extra hard for female asian (assuming bc the bamboo comment) attorneys
I am not, but I definitely agree with that statement and feel I am relatively advantaged from an intersectional perspective.
Consider it a blessing. Fuck them. The right opportunity always presents itself. I know you were set on making partner and that could still pan out elsewhere. If you were to choose something else it will all work out the way it’s supposed to I promise you.
You are who you are and you’ve come a long way. Chin up. Most of us, diverse associates, will need to take alternative paths. I know we will break that ceiling one way or the other. Stay strong.
I’m so sorry this happened to you and all the younger associates who needed to see you in the partnership ranks to be inspired and have someone advocating for them. This feels like a blow to the whole community and I’m grieving with you even though I don’t know you.
Really hate to see this. I also hate this black and white thinking, why is there absolutely no path for you? If they're willing to find GC why can't they bend a little to open up another path to partner for you?
If your sponsor was supposed to be enough, then maybe he's saying one thing to your face and another thing in the partner meeting.
Perhaps there are other firms or organizations that align more closely with your values and mission. Remember that your worth and potential for success are not determined by external factors such as race or status, and that there are always other paths to pursue.
I’m sorry to hear, and sending you good vibes. FWIW, a few AOC’s have lateraled to our firm to become partner who essentially had your experience. Your dreams are not over, but the GC role might be a blessing in disguise.
Pouring you some dark liquor
BIG LAW is overrated. Take your sponsor partner's advice and run, not walk, to in-house. Especially a GC position. Consider yourself lucky to have a sponsor with that much pull. There is more to our profession than just being some dopey partner in a law firm.
