13 years is a long time to be out of the interview game, so don't beat yourself up for feeling rusty. The STAR method sounds more intimidating than it actually is. It's just: here's a situation I was in, here's what I needed to do, here's what I did, here's what happened. You've been doing that naturally in conversations your entire career, you just haven't been calling it STAR. Practice with a friend or even just talk through a few examples out loud. It clicks fast once you start.
I think the one topic individuals enjoy speaking about is themselves. Thats a subject you dont need to Practice or Study just Tailor to the moment. Break your week/month or responsibilities down in 3-5 key bullets to elaborate on. 2nd) Discuss 1 areas that was challenging/difficult for you, explain how you achieved/mastered the task or situation. 3rd) Discuss why you are still passionate or drawn to this position. 4th) Bring it full-circle by describing why you are the right individual for this position. Don't Be Afraid To Discuss You, You Are The STAR!
It’s overwhelming bc it is new. I’ve been laid off 3 times. It’s tiring and can be stressful but u will get through it
I totally know how you feel - I got the news around the same time in the UK and hadn't interviewed in 8 years either so was stressing about that. I stepped up my applications towards the end of January and had a bit more interest, suddenly had a whirlwind recruitment over the last week for a 12 month contract where they did two interviews and made an offer within three days, and the interviews were actually quite relaxed nice chats. I had a couple of STAR examples ready to use but ended up describing them a bit more informally as that was the tone of the interview, and the people were so nice.
I've had a couple of other interviews elsewhere that were more stressful but it's worked out a lot better than I feared thankfully.
I can tell you it is overwhelming. I have not been o. An interview since 2016. I know one of the questions they as EA is “ tell us about time you had to deal with a difficult person/customer. What was the situation, what did you do and what was the outcome. It does not have to be work related as long as you answer the question. Good luck
It hasn't been that long for me, but I feel you. Sounds like you were part of the Verizon layoff, as was I. I have *luckily* had at least 5 interviews, but then I get ghosted. I hate it here!
I've had a few phone screens, went to second round, then nothing. It's so depressing
Search TikTok for interview tips and how to frame your resume. I’ve heard if you copy and paste the job description and make the font white at the end of your resume it will increase your chances of getting an interview. Be confident in your interview and give detailed examples. Practice with a friend.
AI is much better tool because a program like ChatGPT is interactive. Upload your resume and copy and paste the job description and ask it to modify your resume to fit the job, ask it to draft a cover letter, etc. And once you get an interview, you can put in the company information, recopy the job description and ask it for interview questions you may expect AND ask it to evaluate your responses. :)
Make AI your BFF. Use a program like ChatGPT to tweak your resume and create cover letter for each job you apply to. Copy and paste the job description and ask it to modify your resume to be an excellent fit, and then copy and paste that. Review it for accuracy, because sometimes AI will add experience you may not have and revise your resume accordingly. Also make sure you tell it to use a natural tone in your cover letter so it doesn't look like it was AI generated. When you get an interview, copy and paste the job description and company information into it and ask it for some interview questions you may expect to be asked and evaluate the answers you give in response. If you're stuck, ask it to give you some questions for you to ask at your interview (because you should ALWAYS ask a couple of questions to demonstrate your level of engagement). Wishing you all the best!
