I’ve had juniors support me on higher level projects because it’s the best way for them to get experience, and it helps me have time to sleep at night.
If it’s successful, I tell every one of them to please put the project in their book. I don’t tell them to claim “the idea” as their own, but they worked on it, and it should be known that they have experience on conceptual campaigns that aren’t just one-off tactical projects.
Was their name listed on the award list? No. But they helped get us there.
I’m sick of this industry being so worried about who owns what or what you individually sold in. What younger creatives need is mentorship on how to go about presenting the work in their portfolio, because many either end up doing this (too confident) or don’t show it at all (too scared).
I am just a mid weight, and I wouldn't claim credit of something I haven't done. And I'm sick of seeing people I know having campaigns they have contributed to in their folios and going places because of it. Especially when no executions they have created are there, because they and everyone know their part is not good enough for a portfolio. If you want to have the whole thing for context you should state it there.
Yikesssssss. I've noticed this happening with a lot of junior and mid level ADs. They design some banners and then put the whole 360 campaign in their book and present it as their idea and campaign. Not sure if they don't realize what they're doing is completely hacky, or they just don't care because they have no ideas of their own. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♀️
@seniorartdirector2 I get it. Just give the credits for those who helped you. Or don’t sell the whole thing as been yours.
Rising Star
Happens all the time though. Doing that isn’t exactly an anomaly.
I interviewed someone who brought in some of my work once. I, of course, told him how great it was. Then I asked how he produced it because it was a very technical process. I then ripped it up in front of him and watched him get defiant and agitated. I then watched him apologize and beg for forgiveness when I told him I produced it.
SAD2, Just wanted to ensure he didn’t represent my work again. Bullet dodged, I guess.
Did you tell them? Btw, I assume you knew it got awards and you were credited for those, and they wasn't.
Ugh, I’m cringing in advance…what did he say?😬
Had someone apply for a job and put a campaign I wrote in their book. Figured out he did a bit of the creative for the event portion. The gall of some folks man.
I don’t judge. But at least he could know I did that thing…
