I’ve been unemployed since January due to a lay off and it’s been a struggle. People treat you differently if you divulge this information when asked so I’ve gotten to the point where I lie and say I’m still working. I’ve been ghosted by recruiters more times than I can count at this point, the few interviews I’ve had I’ve been passed over for other candidates and when I ask for feedback I’m either ghosted or told that they’re not permitted to give feedback. The whole experience is soul crushing and I feel like a total failure, I’ve never struggled this hard to find employment.
I cope by reminding myself that this too shall pass and focus all my efforts at the gym, I spend 2 hours a day working out and it’s a healthy way to channel my frustration instead of sitting in my apartment binge watching and eating ice cream. I try to keep to a routine daily and set aside time for job searching, gym, errands, etc. I never thought id say this but I actually long to go into an office with my next role just to have more of a routine.
Thank you, I really appreciate that. Please hang in there and know you’re not alone with your frustrations.
I’ve been “freelance” (laid off) for 2+ years. The gigs are getting shorter and shorter, with longer gaps in between. I’m 40 years old and my career might be ending. Who knows.
Recruiters are telling me it’s the worst they’ve seen the market (worse than 08-09).
If you have a job, I’d suggest following your passions after work.
People with piles of hardware (clios and lions) reply to the same degrading “cattle call” LinkedIn messages that I do.
I am right there with you OP. I have been doing the same thing for six months and it has been very challenging and frustrating. I have just been putting one foot in front of another and applying to al the jobs that I can find in hopes of landing something soon.
